Cowtown Rundown: Kansas City Sports News 8/28

Eagles beat Chiefs 20-17 in last minute

The Kansas City Chiefs played much, much better than they have in the previous two games marking the second consecutive game they've seen progress.

Of course they still lost.

The Chiefs, who had scored their second offensive touchdown in a preseason game for the first time since Aug. 28, 2008, were leading the Eagles late in the game. Up in the press box, folks started writing stories involving the Chiefs winning.

Of course they still lost.

With 23 seconds left, Eagles QB Mike Kafka hit WR Riley Cooper in the end zone for the game-winner. It was really deflating but overall I think people are feeling good about the game despite the loss.

Chiefs OLB Cameron Sheffield carted off with neck injury

This was definitely a scary moment. Chiefs rookie LB Cameron Sheffield was knocked out on a helmet-to-helmet hit while trying to tackle RB Mike Bell. Trainers came out and after 10-15 minutes loaded him on a stretcher, onto a cart, and off the field.

The Chiefs are calling it a neck injury at this point. Here's what LB Demorrio Williams told us after the game:

"It was kind of weird because I looked at him and he ain't even moving," Chiefs LB Demorrio Williams softly told us after the game. "His eyes and stuff like that...he's just looking. I was worried about him because he's like a little brother."

It seemed to shake everyone up for a while. Todd Haley said he didn't have any new information he was comfortable sharing publicly but said the Chiefs are praying for him.

Royals are destroyed 15-4

Checking out Royals Review's wrapup post, Will McDonald lists the Royals offensive activity on Friday night:

  • 13 singles
  • 6 walks
  • 2 doubles
  • 1 home run

No, seriously 16 hits and only four runs is impressive. That's hard to do.

No charges yet for Derrick Washington

Mizzou RB Derrick Washington is the topic of conversation lately.

On Thursday, he was surprisingly suspended from the football team indefinitely. No word was given why and it was a big blow to other Mizzou players.

On Thursday night, we know a woman had accused Washington of sexual assault (back in June).

To this point, charges haven't been filed against Washington. The prosecutor's office has said they're reviewing "a matter" involving Washington and they haven't determined yet if they'll file charges.
