2012 NFL Offseason: Kansas City Chiefs No. 1 Priority Is Brandon Carr

The Kansas City Chiefs have a few very important decisions to make regarding a few of their current free agents. I already wrote about one of those players in running back/ full back Le'Ron McClain, and that the Chiefs need to re-sign that man, yesterday. But on the defensive side of the ball it all begins and ends with Brandon Carr. T

he problem is that Brandon Carr knows this too and the Chiefs under the watchful eye of Scott Pioli have not been in the business of paying a player more than they feel that they are worth to the team. It's not a bad thing it's just that you won't see any Kansas City Chiefs players signing deals that make them the highest paid player at their respective position in the NFL. Pioli has done a good job so far at locking up the young talent on this team and that included Jamaal Charles, Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali. None of those guys signed record-breaking deals despite entering the 'prime' of their careers. Brandon Carr is looking for his payday and within the new CBA rules, the Chiefs should be able to pay Carr everything that he is worth without having to outbid anyone else for him.

But cornerbacks are in high demand and it's one of the highest paid positions on the defense for one simple reason. It's hard to find good ones, and Carr is a good one. We all watched the Pittsburgh Steelers attempt to play the same defense against the Broncos that the Chiefs did just a week prior, but the Steelers couldn't match up their corners on the Broncos wideouts and Tebow went off on them. With the Chiefs ultimately having to play Tebow twice a year for at least one more year, it's important to be able to throw two solid corners out there and put the focus on stopping his best skill set, running the ball.

I don't know how much money it will cost the Chiefs to re-sign Carr. But I do know the Chiefs are just a couple of years away from HAVING to be at the salary floor in regards to the salary cap and if they don't spend some money on Carr, I am very interested to know what they have planned for that money, because they'll be forced to spend it one day. And I think today's a good day, but then again, it's not my money.
