The Kansas Jayhawks are not the elite team that they’ve been in years past under Bill Self, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not a contender yet again for another Big 12 title. The Jayhawks are currently ranked No. 15 in the country and face a stiff test this week with the Kansas State Wildcats on Wednesday as their next opponent heading into Big 12 conference play.
The Jayhawks were expected to take a hit after losing the Morris twins and Josh Selby to the NBA Draft as well as a class of solid role players with the graduating seniors. Thomas Robinson has certainly stepped up, but the lack of depth overall has hurt the Jayhawks as well as inconsistent guard play. Currently the Jayhawks are 10-3.

The official results are in this week for the latest college basketball rankings and Frank Martin’s tenacious Kansas State Wildcats are finally being recognized on the national level, giving three local teams some credit in the latest USA Today/Coaches Poll.
The Wildcats are now 11-1 entering conference play and there’s a major match-up with the rival Kansas Jayhawks on January 4, which will either lift the Jayhawks spirits back toward the top ten (currently they are No. 15) or else the Wildcats will have their biggest win of the season in the books. If anything, it gives a local rivalry some national attention.
