Joakim Soria Injury: Royals Weigh Options For Closer

The Kansas City Royals are still trying to figure out a plan for which player will inherit the currently-vacant closer role. Joakim Soria was expected to once again rack up the saves this year before receiving the news that he will require Tommy John surgery that will knock him out of action for the year.

Dick Kaegel of MLB.com reports that the Royals are weighing their options. Luckily, they have no shortage of candidates for the role, as there are three potential closers on the roster in Jonathan Broxton, Aaron Crow and Greg Holland.

Manager Ned Yost doubts he will officially designate a permanent closer by Opening Day.

"Normally you've got one guy you've got confidence in to get the ninth inning," he said. "Here I've got three guys that I've got confidence in that I can put in the ninth inning of any game and they're going to close it out."

Royals fans can expect to see the three pitchers trade off ninth-inning responsibilities to start the season before one of them sets himself apart. This certainly speaks to the depth of the 2012 Kansas City bullpen.
