2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Creighton Wins Championship 8-6 Over Southern Illinois

Creighton wins its second straight Missouri Valley Conference Tournament with an 8-6 win over Southern Illinois. The Blue Jays ran through the tournament with an undefeated 4-0 record and became the lowest seed to ever win the tournament.

Chance Ross and Mike Gerber finished with three hits each for Creighton. Jake Peter and Anthony Bemboom each drove in two runs. Jordan Silvertsen and Brian Bajer drove in two runs each for Southern Illinois.

Mark Winkelman earns the win with a perfect inning of relief. Kurt Spomer earns his third save of the season by getting the final three outs of the game. Tyler Dray takes the loss allowing one hit and two runs in just a 1/3 of an inning. Neither starting pitcher Ty Blach or cody forsythe figured in the decision. Forsythe allowed four runs in four innings and Blach gave up four runs in three innings of work.

MVC Baseball Tournament 2012: Creighton, Southern Illinois Meet In Championship Game

The 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament will come to its conclusion on Saturday night, as the Creighton Blue Jays and Southern Illinois Salukis meet in this year's championship game.

The championship matchup is somewhat of an upset, as Creighton entered the tournament as the eighth seed, while Southern Illinois entered the tournament as the sixth seed. Top-seeded Indiana State did not win a single game in the tournament, losing 5-0 to Creighton in the opening round, before being eliminated on Wednesday by Evansville.

Just as Creighton defeated the No. 1 seed earlier in the tournament, Southern Illinois defeated the No. 2 seed in the tournament, and tournament host, Missouri State. The Salukis defeated Missouri State on Friday, 3-2 in 10 innings, and in doing so, advanced to the championship game on Saturday night.

The championship tilt between Creighton and Southern Illinois is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night. Televised coverage of the game can be found on MVC TV.

2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Creighton Advances To Championship With 10-3 Win Over Illinois State

The unlikely tournament run of Creighton has reached the pinnacle.

The No. 8 seed — the lowest in the tournament — has reached the MVC Baseball Tournament championship game after Thursday's 10-3 win over Illinois State.

Blue Jays starter Erik Mattingly gave up three runs (one earned) over six innings. Creighton got on the board first with a two-run opening frame. After a three-run fifth, Illinois State answered with a three-run bottom frame. The Redbirds scored one in the seventh to the cut deficit to one, but Creighton answered with a five-run eighth to put the game away and punch its ticket to the championship.

The Blue Jays were led at the plate by second baseman Peter Jake, who went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Illinois State was led by outfielder Chad Hinshaw, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The championship will be played at 7 p.m. on Saturday, against either Illinois State, Southern Illinois or Missouri State.

2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Missouri State Knocks Off Bradley, 11-8

The Missouri State Bears notched another win in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament after defeating the Bradley Braves by a final score of 11-8.

Missouri State's Luke Voit led the Bears offense with five RBI's on five hits and Chaffin Brock contributed three RBI's to the cause while Kevin Medrano, Brent Seifert and Dylan Becker each registered an RBI apiece. Gordon Grant got the win on the mound for Missouri State going four-and-one-third innings giving up five hits and three earned runs while walking one batter and striking out four Bradley Batters.

For the Braves, Jason Leblebijian had three RBI's while Mike Tauchman, Rob Eliot and Jarrod Eigsti each contributed an RBI each. Tory Doerr got the start for Bradley but went five-and-one-third innings and gave up nine hits and five earned runs while walking one Missouri State batter and striking out four.

2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Illinois State Defeats Evansville, 5-4

The fourth seeded Illinois State Redbirds advanced past the fifth seeded Evansville Purple Aces in the Missouri Valley Tournament by a final score of 5-4 in 10 innings. Chad Hinshaw hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the 10th inning and Kenny Long pitched a scoreless bottom half of the 10th to secure the victory.

The Redbirds will now face off against the Creighton Blue Jays and if they win, the Redbirds will force another game with Creighton on Friday. However, with a loss, the Illinois State Redbirds will be eliminated from the tournament.

Illinois State had to come from behind in order to defeat Evansville after the Purple Aces took an early 2-0 lead. The Redbirds tied the game in the fourth inning but Evansville regained the lead by scoring two more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Illinois State would come back to tie things in the ninth inning and took the lead for good in the tenth.

2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Southern Illinois, Creighton Surprising The Field

The 2012 Missouri Valley tournament rolls on with action beginning Thursday morning with the Missouri State being the highest seed left in the tournament since Indiana State was upset and lost their first two games. Even though Missouri State is the highest seed remaining they have already lost a game and are facing an elimination game when they take on No. 7 seeded Bradley.

The other game is between No. 4 Illinois State and No. 5 Evansville who also each have lost one game so far and also facing elimination.

No. 8 seeded Creighton and No. 6 seeded Southern Illinois have been the surprise of the tournament as both are undefeated and will face the winners of the early games from Thursday morning.

2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Creighton Defeats Illinois State, 11-5

It was a battle of the birds on Wednesday at the Missouri Valley Tournament in Springfield, Mo. as the eighth seeded Creighton Blue Jays took on the fourth seeded Illinois State Redbirds and scored another big upset, winning the game by a final score of 11-5.

Creighton, who finished last in the MVC during the regular season, going 6-14 in conference play and 24-28 overall, had already knocked off top seeded Indiana State on the first day of the tournament. They continued their improbable run by defeating an Illinois State team who finished fourth in the conference at 10-9 but had a strong year overall going 32-18.

For the Blue Jays, Shane Liska was the winning pitcher as he went six full innings and gave up five hits and two earned runs while walking just one batter and striking out six. Chance Ross and Mike Gerber each had three RBI's to lead the Creighton offense.

2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Missouri State Shuts Out Wichita State 7-0

Cody Schumacher pitched a complete game shutout for Missouri State on Wednesday, as the Bears rolled past Wichita State, winning 7-0.

Schumacher was dominant in the 111 pitch outing. Schumacher allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out eight en route to his eighth win of the year. It was the first career shutout for Schumacher, and it came at an opportune time for Missouri State.

Kris Gardner started for Wichita State, and he failed to escape the first inning. Gardner recorded just two outs, allowing five runs on five hits.

Five members of Missouri State's starting lineup recorded multi-hit games, as Spiker Helms, Keenen Maddox, Luke Voit, Brock Chaffin and Eric Cheray all recorded two hits in the win.

With the loss, Wichita State has been eliminated from the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

Missouri State will play again on Thursday, as they await the loser of the Southern Illinois/Bradley game. First pitch for Missouri State's Thursday bout is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CT.

2012 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament: Evansville Knocks Off Indiana State

After a wild Day 1 of the Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament, the upsets keep coming on Day 2.

In early morning action Wednesday, fifth seed Evansville knocked off top seed Indiana State 8-5, eliminating the Sycamores from the Tournament.

The Purple Aces came out hot, with two runs in the first and five in the second, giving themselves a comfortable 7-0 lead to protect against a desperate Indiana State team. Dakota Bacus, their pitcher, was roughed up early and often, and he ended the day giving up eight runs and 11 hits in six innings.

The Sycamores made it interesting late, getting two runs in the third and three runs in the eighth, but it wasn't enough to save their chances. They became the first MVC team in over two decades to win the regular season championship and lose the first two games of the conference tournament.

2012 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament: Day 2 Preview

After a day filled with upsets, several top seeds will begin play at the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament on Wednesday in the loser's bracket, and facing elimination. No. 1 overall seed Indiana State begins play against No. 5 Evansville at 9 a.m. CT after being blanked by No. 8 seed Creighton 5-0 on Tuesday, while No. 2 Missouri State and No. 3 Wichita State will both face off in the loser's bracket of Group B, after having both lost on Tuesday as well. The only high seed that advanced on Tuesday was No. 4 Illinois State, who beat Evansville 10-3, and will face Creighton.

2012 MVC Baseball Tournament: Upsets Galore On First Day Of Tournament

The 2012 Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament got underway in Springfield, Mo., on Tuesday, and no team was safe.

Top-seeded Indiana State managed just one hit in a 5-0 loss to No. 8 seed Creighton. Blue Jays pitcher Ty Blach faced three over the minimum, pitching all nine innings for the shutout.

Creighton advanced to face No. 4 seed Illinois State, which downed No. 5 seed Evansville 10-3 earlier in the day. Illinois State outfielder Eric Aguilera went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the Redbirds at the plate. Indiana State and Evansville will meet in the bottom part of Bracket A. In Bracket B, No. 6 seed Southern Illinois upset No. 3 seed Wichita State by a 6-3 score. Southern Illinois first baseman Chris Serritella went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Salukis. Southern Illinois advanced to face No. 7 seed Bradley, who beat No. 2 seed Missouri State 5-3.

Bradley outfielder Mike Tauchman hit a two-RBI single in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and the Braves held on for the win. Missouri State will face Wichita State on Wednesday.

So, to recap the day: The top three seeds are all one loss away from elimination. Wednesday should be quite dramatic.
