Montreal Impact Defeats Sporting KC 2-0

Sometimes possession isn’t everything, and tonight’s game demonstrated that. Just as they did in Portland, Sporting Kansas City dominated possession and created more chances, but Montreal’s found the back of the net.

Montreal scored first on a long range blast in the 30th minute by Felipe Martins that slotted in the bottom left corner. They would add a second when awarded a penalty on an Aurelien Collin in the 64th minute. Patrice Bernier calmly stepped up and took the penalty and Jimmy Nielsen went the wrong way.

Sporting immediately substituted Teal Bunbury for CJ Sapong after that goal, but Bunbury failed to make the impact to help Sporting KC back into the game. Several chances were wasted late in the match, including Collin getting called offside twice when going in for clear headers.

The loss closes the gap between Sporting and second place D.C. United to three points after D.C.‘s 2-0 win against Toronto. Don’t get too worried though as D.C. has played three more matches already this season. For Montreal, this is a huge step forward, their first road win in MLS, and it moves them into the middle of a jumbled Eastern Conference.
