Former Blue Valley West star, and current Vanderbilt commit Collin Wiles was selected with the 53rd overall choice in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers on Monday evening during the supplemental portion of the first round.
This marks the second year in a row that a Kansas high school prep was selected the first evening of the draft after last year when Bubba Starling was picked by the Kansas City Royals with the fifth overall selection.
Wiles' Jaguars recently were the Class 6A runner-ups in the KSHSAA baseball tournament held in Lawrence over Memorial Day weekend. The second seeded Blue Valley West lost to eighth-seeded upstart and city rival Blue Valley North 1-0 in the title game. North finished the year 17-8, while West closed the season at 22-3.
