2012 MLB Draft: Kansas City Royals Select Stanford SS Kenny Diekroeger In Round 4

Stay connected for news and updates

We finally have a position player as Kansas City has now selected Stanford Cardinal shortsthop Kenny Diekroeger with the 133rd overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft.

Diekroeger was actually a second round pick in 2009 out of high school by the Tampa Bay Rays. He turned down $2 million and went to Stanford instead. Baseball America's 118th overall prospect, Diekroeger has been on a roller coaster since arriving in Palo Alto.

He will likely move to second base as a pro and many scouts look at him as a solid utility player. It appears that Diekroeger is a prime example of why a player should take the money coming out of high school and focus on their baseball career first.

While this isn't a sexy pick for the Royals, it certainly is an interesting one. If the Royals can figure out a way to bring out what scouts saw that made him a second round pick, Kansas City could have found a gem.
