Royals second baseman Chris Getz had season-ending surgery on a fractured thumb Saturday.
Kansas City Royals second baseman Chris Getz suffered a broken thumb Friday night laying down a bunt. Saturday morning Getz had surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center, performed by Dr. Bruce Toby. Chris Sale hit Getz with a fastball when the Royals starter was attempting a bunt; Getz remained in the game:
"When we saw it," manager Ned Yost said, "I figured his thumb was broken and he's such a tough kid and he said, 'I'm all right, I'm all right,' but after those two swings, I knew he wasn't all right."
"I'm surprised he stayed in the game," teammate Alex Gordon said. "With a shattered thumb, that's impressive."
The surgery will sideline Getz for the remainder of the 2012 season, less than two weeks after Kansas City made him the full-time starter upon the release of Yuniesky Betancourt. The Royals will call up Johnny Giavotella from Omaha to replace Getz.
