2012 U.S. Open Tennis: Kansas City's Jack Sock Scores First Round Upset

Overland Park resident Jack Sock has defeated Germany's Florian Mayer, 6-3, 6-2, 3-2, on Monday afternoon in the first round of the U.S. Open. The 19-year-old from Blue Valley North High School beat the 22nd-seeded German in straight sets after Mayer retired in the third set.

Despite 23 unforced errors, Sock handled Mayer throughout the match. Sock hit nine aces on the afternoon to Mayer's two, and posted 34 winners while Mayer had just eight. The young American put the heat on Mayer, winning 79% of points and averaging 115 m.p.h. on first serves.

Sock awaits the winner of Blaz Kavcic and Flavio Cippola in the second round. Their match currently stands at 4-6, 5-4.

The Kansas City resident has posted his second-straight first-round victory at the U.S. Open. He defeated Marc Gicquel in four sets in 2011 before losing in straight sets to Andy Roddick.
