2012 U.S. Open Scores: Overland Park's Jack Sock Keeps Rolling At Flushing Meadows

Overland Park resident Jack Sock, fresh off a first-round upset of No. 22 seed Florian Meyer, won his second round match in straight sets against Italy's Flavio Cipolla on Thursday afternoon in Queens.

Sock jumped out to an early lead, taking the first two sets from Cipolla, 6-2, 6-2 on the strength of 13 aces. He outlasted the Italian, 6-4, in the third set despite committing 18 unforced errors. He finished the match with 15 aces, 41 winners and 42 unforced errors

The 19-year-old Sock, who entered the tournament ranked No. 248 in the ATP rankings (and without a win over a top-50 player) advanced to the second round by jumping ahead of Mayer in the first two sets (6-3, 6-2) and claiming victory when Mayer was forced to retire down 3-2 in the third set due to dizziness. He was ousted in the second round of last year's Open by Andy Roddick.

Sock teamed with fellow American Melanie Oudin to win the mixed doubles title at last year's U.S. Open.

In a third round match slated for Saturday, Sock will face Spain's Nicolas Almagro who downed Germany's Philipp Petzschner in five sets, 6-3, 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 Thursday morning.
