Olympics Medal Count: China Remains Ahead Of United States For Lead

China was able to slightly extend its lead in the medal count after Tuesday's events.

Heading into Wednesday, China leads with 73 total medals, including 34 golds. The United States remains in second with 70 total medals, including 30 golds. Behind the top two, Great Britain and Russia are tied with 48 medals each, although the host has 22 golds, compared to 10 for Russia. Japan remains in fifth with 29 total medals.

China grabbed four medals in the four gymnastics events on the day, while the U.S. grabbed two thanks to Aly Raisman. The U.S. took four medals in various track & field events, while the Chinese won the women's team table tennis gold.

Here are the top five current leaders in total medals:

1. China - 73 (34, 21, 18)
2. United States - 70 (30, 19, 21)
3. Great Britain - 48 (22, 13, 13)
4. Russia - 48 (10, 18, 20)
5. Japan - 29 (2, 13, 14)
