Orioles Rookie Sensation Manny Machado Impresses Kansas City Royals

Only baseball has the ability to allow an individual to create his own glory despite what's going on around him. A well-timed home run will deliver a moment. Manny Machado had three such moments against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, helping the Baltimore Orioles even the series with a 5-3 win.

The rookie sensation was the team's first choice in the 2010 MLB Draft and third overall selection, so his ascension to the Majors has been a quick one. However his power is clearly on display in the Majors after surprisingly hitting just 11 home runs this year in the minors.

"He's never played above Double-A and he comes here and he has three home runs," Royals starter Bruce Chen said. "He's been thrown onto the fire, the team's fighting for a [playoff] spot and he's responded very well. He definitely has the makeup and definitely has the ability. He's going to be a good player for a long time, so we better get used to making good pitches to him."

Royals manager Ned Yost was happy for the overall results of the weekend in Baltimore and came away happy with the road trip despite the sour note at the end.

"It was OK. You know what? We're playing better baseball," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "I thought today's game was OK; we made a couple of mistakes but we played well, This whole trip we played well so I'm anxious to get home and see what we can do there."

The Royals face the Oakland Athletics at home to start this week.

Royals Vs. Orioles Final Score: Kansas City Drops Final Game In Series To Baltimore, 5-3

In the final game of a four-game set, the Kansas City Royals feel to the Baltimore Orioles 5-3. The Royals led 3-2 after the top half of the fifth inning but the Orioles Nick Markakis hit a solo home run to the tie the game at three off of starting pitcher Bruce Chen. Then in the sixth inning the Orioles had a RBI single by Mark Reynolds which would ultimately be the game winning play, also came off of Chen. In the eighth the Orioles added one more run on a passed ball.

The Royals offense just could not get anything going after the fifth inning as they were held hitless by a combined four Orioles relief pitchers, and during the final four innings the Royals had only one player reach base so their chances to make a comeback just were not there Sunday night.

Royals Vs. Orioles: Bruce Chen Faces Tommy Hunter In Series Finale

Bruce Chen has served as the steady veteran for the Kansas City Royals starting rotation these last few years as the team has tried to develop young prospects around him. Against the odds, Chen turned his career around in KC after coming to the team in 2009 and Dayton Moore was happy to re-sign him again and again with solid results each year in the midst of a frustrating staff. This year it's been a bit unsettling to watch Chen fail to deliver.

Yet Chen's last start against the Chicago White Sox gave reason for hope that he might be settling. He defeated the ChiSox with solid control and allowed only two runs in six-plus innings and earned the win for the Royals. He'll hope to continue that momentum today against the Baltimore Orioles in the series finale.

"His last three or four starts, he comes out and he hasn't established his fastball," manager Ned Yost said. "All he's doing is throwing 82, 83, trying to get his control down, but he's got nothing to speed the bats up so they sit soft."

The Royals have taken two of three from Baltimore so far in the series and the winning team has scored at least seven runs each night, so both Chen and Tommy Hunter for the O's are hoping that's not the case their opponent.

Royals Vs. Orioles Final Score: Alex Gordon Homers Twice In 7-3 KC Win

Alex Gordon hit two homers and the Kansas City Royals overcame a three-hour rain delay to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 7-3.

Gordon's first inning home run began the scoring and his solo shot in the seventh capped the Royals night. Billy Butler and Salvador Perez also went deep in the win.

Luis Mendoza could have very well been the story as he picked up his sixth win of the season while allowing seven hits and three runs. Mendoza shut out the Orioles through the first six innings but couldn't escape a little trouble in the seventh.

Chris Tillman takes the loss for Baltimore giving up six hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. Tillman surrendered three of the four homeruns hit by the Royals. Kelvin Herrera and Tim Collins gave up one hit but zero runs in three combined relief innings for Kansas City.

Royals Vs. Orioles Final Score: Kansas City Falls 7-1 To Baltimore

The Kansas City Royals offense struggled on Friday night as they fell to the Baltimore Orioles 7-1 as Miguel Gonzalez pitched eight innings and held the Royals to six hits and allowed only one run. The Royals did not get any help from their starting pitcher Luke Hochevar gave up all seven runs in only 5.1 innings.

The inning that made the difference in the sixth inning as the Orioles put up four runs Nate McLouth had a RBI double, and then Manny Machado hit a three-run home run to give the Orioles a 7-1 lead. Greg Holland Has Adjusted Well To Closer Role For Kansas City Royals

The most likely trade candidate for the Kansas City Royals leading up to the MLB trade deadline was Jonathan Broxton and everyone knew it. Not only was he a sell-high free-agent-to-be, but the Royals also enjoy the luxury of a deep bullpen with other options to close out games. As it turns out, those premonitions were right and Broxton was dealt for two prospects to the Cincinnati Reds.

The reasons behind being able to safely trade away Broxton were also true given that new closer Greg Holland has adjusted well to the role. In fact, it was guessed by many that Holland could become the closer right after Joakim Soria's injury, but Broxton became the man instead.

"I'm just taking it as another inning," Holland said. "That's been my mentality, just go out there and approach the situation like you would in the seventh or eighth inning. It just happens to be the last three outs -- and the only way to really get into any extra trouble in the ninth inning is to think about it as the ninth inning."

"I feel like the more opportunities I get, the more chances we get at winning games," he continued. "That's the big part of it. We played really well three days in Chicago and I got two chances. So hopefully we get a couple more here in Baltimore."

Holland is 5-3 with a 3.35 ERA and 3 saves on the season.

Will Smith allowed two earned runs over seven innings in the start as the Royals earned an 8-2 win over the Orioles in Baltimore on Thursday night.

Will Smith Needs To Remain In Royals Rotation For Rest Of Season

Any hopes for a playoff push for the Kansas City Royals is out of the question at this point in 2012. Instead, it's yet another familiar look ahead to "next season" in the hopes that it's actually the year the team becomes relevant. It's been said year after year, but 2013 seriously holds some potential for postseason play, which means the rest of this year is actually quite important.

Will Smith is the perfect example. The Royals rotation is a total mess, but there are signs of life in the farm system, players returning from injury and slightly intriguing players already in house at the ML level. Perhaps Smith is the best of those, as a player who made his Major League debut earlier this season to disastrous results but has since come back to show what the Royals saw in him in the first place.

Smith takes the mound today for the Orioles and this should continue through season's end if management knows what it's doing. Smith has shown great flashes from start to start but he's also not dependable at this point. The good news is that Smith has thrown at least five-plus innings in each start since his return to the Majors, but he needs reps. He needs experience. He needs the chance to work out of situations and see a line-up several times -- even the same team multiple times.

The stretch run will tell the Royals about a lot of players, but Smith in particular could be key. If he can gain some level of consistency and provide the rotation with a predictable six innings each and every time on the mound, that's at least one slot the team can count on for next season. Given the state of the rest of the rotation, that's a major plus for a team in need.
