Brandon Flowers Injury: Chiefs CB Questionable For Practice

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers has returned to practice on a limited basis and is questionable for the team's regular season opener Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

"If I’m out there game day, I’ll be ready to go," Flowers told the Chiefs' website. "I really don’t get all wrapped up with being 100-percent because in football, nobody is really ever 100-percent. If I’m out there, I’ll be ready."

Flowers has only recently started practicing after sustaining a left-heel injury that kept him out the entire preseason.

"It is what it is. Nobody likes being away from the game when you’re passionate about the sport," Flowers said. "You have to deal with things as they come. I’m looking forward to getting back out there.

"You can never predict injuries. I definitely wanted to get back out there sooner during the preseason, but I didn’t. So, I’ll get ready for the regular season."

Junior Hemingway Cut From Chiefs Practice Squad

Seventh round draft pick Junior Hemingway has been cut from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad to make room for offensive lineman Rich Ranglin, according to the team. The move is one of need on a roster that was deep in wide receivers but weak along the offensive line.

A 6-foot-1 receiver, Hemingway was selected by the Chiefs 238th overall in the 2012 draft. Hemingway finished his 2011 college football season with 699 yards on 34 catches for the Michigan Wolverines.

Ranglin, who played at Central Connecticut State from 2003-07, was signed by Kansas City in May as an undrafted free agent but did not make the final 53-man roster.

He has spent time in the Arena Football League the past three years. The 6'2, 315 pound Ranglin was the offensive lineman of the year in 2011 while playing with the Kansas City Command, and he was most recently with the San Jose Sabercats.

Derrick Johnson, Allen Bailey Among Chiefs Not Practicing Monday

The Kansas City Chiefs are hurting. One year after the team lost several starters like Eric Berry, Jamaal Charles and Tony Moeaki for the entire season, the Chiefs already have several players who could be questionable for the upcoming opener against the Atlanta Falcons. It's not a good sign for a team that needs a strong start to stay with their rivals in a much tougher AFC West than last year.

Not only are the Chiefs down several players in practice today, the team will also be without Tamba Hali in the first week due to suspension. That takes away the team's best defender. Romeo Crennel spoke about the rest of the guys who are injured today from Arrowhead.

"As far as practice goes, Derrick Johnson, he's not going to be practicing," said Crennel. "[Kendrick] Lewis will not be practicing. [Brandon] Flowers we limited, he'll be in the same situation he's been in, he'll be limited. [Allen] Bailey is not practicing and [Anthony] Toribio is not practicing.

"[Jalil] Brown, he's going to be limited and he's going try to do some things and we'll see how much he can do. [Terrance] Copper, he'll be limited, he'll try to do some and also Cyrus Gray, he'll be limited and we'll see what he can do. So that's where we are and that's what we've got going and we're going to try to get something done today and a good head start on Atlanta."

The Chiefs defense is going to be the anchor for any chance of winning the division this year, so to be without so many guys when facing a juggernaut offense like the Falcons will be as great a test as any in 2012.

Derrick Johnson Expected To Play Against Falcons, According To Romeo Crennel

Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson should be ready for the season opener, according to Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel. Johnson injured his ankle in Kansas City's fourth and final preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.

The eight-year veteran out of Texas had his best season last year, recording a career-high 131 tackles. He has only missed six games in his career.

Reserve quarterback Brady Quinn, who is in a tight race with fifth-rounder Ricky Stanzi for the backup position, also sustained minor injuries against Green Bay. Both QBs were retained on the Chiefs' 53-man roster on Friday.

Kansas City will open their season against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 9 at 12 p.m. CST.

Chiefs Roster Cuts: Kansas City Waives 19 Players

The Kansas City Chiefs had to cut down their roster size to 53 players, and to get to that number they placed defensive back De'Quan Menzie and quarterback Alex Tanney on the injured reserve list that ends their season. Plus, they had to outright waive 19 players.

Players waived:

Brandon Bair DL
• Mikail Baker DB
Josh Bellamy WR
Rob Bruggeman OL
Patrick DiMarco FB
Chandler Fenner DB
Darryl Harris G
Junior Hemingway WR
Jerome Long DL
Gabe Miller LB
David Mims OL
• Jamar Newsome WR
Terrance Parks DB
Lucas Patterson OL
• Rich Ranglin OL
• Neiko Thorpe DB
Donald Washington S
Amon Gordon DL
Leon Williams LB

Injured reserve:

• De'Quan Menzie DB
• Alex Tanney QB

The Chiefs current 53-man roster has no fullbacks and five running backs. Jerome Long and Junior Hemingway, both 2012 draft picks, got cut, and Tysyn Hartman and Nate Eachus, who were undrafted rookies, made the team.

Even though the 53-man roster was named, every team will tinker with the bottom of their roster to try and improve their team.

Chiefs Roster Cuts: RB Nate Eachus Makes Team, FB Patrick DiMarco Does Not

The official word on who the Kansas City Chiefs have cut has not come out yet, but there are a few names trickling out who have made the team or have been released. Running back Nate Eachus has earned a spot on the 53-man roster, and that should not be a surprise as he had two games of 98 and 99 yards each in the preseason, plus a touchdown.

However, fullback Patrick DiMarco was not as lucky as the Chiefs let him go, but according to Arrowhead Pride, the plan is that if he makes his way unclaimed through waivers that the Chiefs will pick him back up and place him on the practice squad. Linebacker Leon Williams has also reportedly been cut, according to a league source.
