A pair of Big 12 newcomers will be in action on Wednesday, looking to make noise in their first tournament as members the league.
The bottom four seeds in the 2013 Big 12 Tournament will be in action on Wednesday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO, beginning with an 8 vs. 9 contest between the West Virginia Mountaineers and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
The Mountaineers struggled in their first season in the Big 12, finishing just 6-12 in conference play and 13-18 under Bob Huggins. Two of those wins came over the Red Raiders, who went just 3-15 in league games. The winner will be greeted in the quarterfinal round by the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks on Thursday.
The second game on the opening night of the Big 12 Tournament features the Texas Longhorns and TCU Horned Frogs. Both teams scuffled to losing records on the season, but the in-state rivals each scored upset victories over Kansas, showing they have the ability to compete. The Kansas State Wildcats await the winner of the nightcap.
