The United States made some strides in the medal count on Wednesday at the 2012 Olympic Games, but they still have a bit of catching up to do if they want to get a true leg up on China. The U.S. now has four medals more than China, but China has two more gold medals than the United States. And you had best believe that the U.S. wants to at least match those gold medals.

There is another heated battle going on for the third spot on the total medal leaderboard, as host country Great Britain has suddenly slipped back into fourth place. Russia reclaimed No. 3 on the list by snaring four more medals than the UK over the last few days.

Here is what the medal count leaderboard looked like heading into Thursday's events.

1. United States - 81 (34, 22, 25)
2. China - 77 (36, 22, 19)
3. Russia - 52 (11, 19, 22)
4. Great Britain - 48 (22, 13, 13)
5. Germany - 32 (7, 15, 10)

That match will highlight a full day of action at the 2012 Olympic Games in London on Thursday. Other gold medal finals will include women's platform diving, men's beach volleyball, men's triple jump and the decathlon.

Here is the complete schedule for Thursday's events. All times are ET, except for the coverage televised on NBC, which will air on tape delay at the same time in all time zones.
On Wednesday night, the Kansas City Royals played the rubber game of their three-game set against the Chicago White Sox. KC managed to emerge victorious, winning the game 2-1 to take the series and play a bit of spoiler for the Sox, who are battling for control of the American League Central.

Mike Moustakas hit a solo home run in the second inning, his 17th of the year, to get the scoring started. Salvador Perez launched a solo home run of his own in the fourth to make it 2-0 Royals. The Kansas City pitching staff held the score right there until the bottom of the ninth. A.J. Pierzynski was able to hit a two-out RBI single to help the White Sox avoid the shutout, but that is all they had in them.

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie pitched eight shutout innings, holding Chicago to five hits and no walks, while striking out six.

James Harden has been the subject of a multitude of trade rumors ever since the 2012 NBA Finals ended. The Oklahoma City Thunder shooting guard and overwhelming fan favorite is currently in London playing for the U.S. men's basketball team in the 2012 Olympics, but he is still fielding questions about where he'll land next year. At the moment, he seems fairly confident that he will return to Oklahoma.

Sam Amick from SI.com had this quote from Harden on Tuesday:

"I'm pretty, a hundred percent, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be in Oklahoma City," Harden said with a slight stutter. "I'll let my agent and Mr. Presti and [Thunder owner Clay] Bennett discuss all that, so I'll let them handle that and stay out of it for right now and worry about the USA Olympics."

Thunder fans would like nothing better than for the full Olympics core of Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant and Harden to return for at least one more season together. They will have to wait and see.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released their initial depth chart prior to their first preseason game. The chart will likely undergo some changes before the regular season kicks off, but it is still worth taking a look.

Joel Thorman at Arrowhead Pride took a look at four of the surprises coming out of the release of the depth chart. The biggest surprise -- and a welcome one to Chiefs fans -- concerns wide receiver Jamaal Charles.

1. Jamaal Charles is on the first team. We shouldn't even have to say this but we will because Haley listed Charles as the No. 2 back during his tenure. Charles is where he deserves to be -- No. 1 on the depth chart.

2. Josh Bellamy is third on the receiver depth chart, behind Steve Breaston and Dexter McCluster. Ahead of Devon Wylie, a fourth round pick. Ahead of Zeke Markshausen, who has experience at Chiefs training camp. So he's my new pick to make it out of the undrafted free agents.

3. Kevin Boss is the No. 1 tight end with Tony Moeaki behind him. Not a major surprise, I suppose. Moeaki is returning to the team this year, Boss is the new guy, so I figured Moeaki may sit atop the depth chart. Apparently not.

4. Brady Quinn is the No. 2 quarterback; Ricky Stanzi is the No. 3 quarterback. This is still a competition and could change during the preseason. I didn't see a noticeably-better Quinn when I was at camp. This is fluid.

On Tuesday at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the United States scored a huge victory by taking the gold medal in the women's team gymnastics event. What's more, since China failed to medal in the event, the two countries remain tied in total medal count, while the U.S. gains ground on China's gold medal lead.

China has 10 gold medals and leads the pack in that respect, although a shooting gold and the gymnastics gold on Tuesday give the U.S. seven gold medals, only three off the pace with plenty of swimming and gymnastics events forthcoming.

Both China and the U.S. lead all countries with 19 total medals each, while Japan is in third place with 12. France has the third-most gold medals, with four. France is fourth in medal count with nine total.

You can find a complete medal count and breakdown at SI.com.

The United States is getting ready to play against Tunisia at the 2012 Olympic Games in London on Tuesday. As Team USA gears up for their second game in Group A, there is an interesting development over in Group B. Spain, which figures to be Team USA's toughest competition in the Summer Games, are dealing with a nagging injury for their team captain, shooting guard Jean Carlos Navarro.

Ian Thomsen of Sports Illustrated reports that Navarro missed Spain's game against Australia on Tuesday after suffering a foot injury in Sunday's opener with China.

"It was very strong and all of a sudden," [Spain head coach Sergio] Scariolo said. "It is nothing related with his former problems. It is a probably a new injury. It is plantar fasciitis, but it is probably in a different place [within the foot].

"He couldn't play. I don't know how many games he will miss."

The United States would definitely have an easier time in a potential final against Spain if the Spanish team is dealing with a depleted roster.
