Detroit Lions v. Kansas City Chiefs Injury Update: Calvin Johnson Questionable, Jon Baldwin Out

The Detroit Lions have an elite-level go-to receiver. The Kansas City Chiefs hope they drafted one. But the Lions’ Calvin Johnson will be questionable heading into Sunday’s contest with an ankle injury, while the Chiefs first round choice, Jonathan Baldwin, will be out another game with a broken thumb. As the two teams play each other, both offenses will be a bit more limited, especially depending on the severity of Johnson’s injury.

The good news for Detroit is that the offense has other weapons, as does the Chiefs roster. Baldwin is the only game-time injury for the Chiefs other than the massive casualties of Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki who were lost for the season already on Injured Reserve.

The Lions will also be without first round choice Nick Fairley and cornerback Alphonso Smith for the game. Safety Louis Delmas is listed as questionable as is wide receiver Maurice Stovall. Fairley has yet to play, so neither team has seen any return on their first round investment thus far.

The Lions look to move to 2-0 with a win on Sunday while the Chiefs are hoping to rebound to 1-1 after last week’s embarrassing home opening loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Detroit Lions Injury Report: Calvin Johnson, Louis Delmas, Nick Fairley Miss Practice

The Kansas City Chiefs have received the lion's share of injury attention lately for the season-ending losses of Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki due to injury. Adam Schefter of ESPN even went so far as to hint that the Chiefs might be in the hunt for the top draft pick in 2012 after just one week. But as the Chiefs try to make things right at 1-1 against the Detroit Lions in week two, the Lions are also hurting -- at least when it comes to practicing the week before.

The Lions' best player, Calvin Johnson, did not practice on Wednesday and he was just one of several names that could change the course of Sunday's contest. Starting safety Louis Delmas is another dynamic young player in the secondary and he failed to practice, as did the team's first round choice Nick Fairley. Jason Fox and Kyle Vanden Bosch also failed to practice at all. Alphonso Smith and Maurice Stovall were listed as limited.

The loss of Vanden Bosch and Delmas could cripple the Lions defensive, particularly helping the Chiefs establish a running game since Jamaal Charles can take his game outside. Of course, missing a practice doesn't mean they will miss Sunday, so there's a lot of time between now and then. But the Chiefs aren't the only ones with injury concerns heading into the weekend.

Kansas City Chiefs Injury Report: Jonathan Baldwin Didn't Practice Wednesday

The official injury reports were released today by the NFL for practices held Wednesday and the Chiefs seem rather injury-free — at least those still active for the season. Given the losses of Tony Moeaki and Eric Berry to season-ending injuries, it’s nice to see that only Jonathan Baldwin remains on the injury list and he failed to practice once again because of his thumb. This comes as no surprise and it means the Chiefs are having the entire offensive and defensive units on the field in practice as they head to Detroit.

That said, the Chiefs are certainly looking forward to the time when even Baldwin is not on the injury report. He was drafted to be a major asset on offense, since sinking a first round draft choice into a wide receiver even in the late 20s signifies high expectations. Add the loss of Moeaki on offense, and the Chiefs could use Baldwin sooner than later.

We will keep you posted as more injury reports come out leading up to Sunday’s contest.
