Coby Fleener is among the top contenders for best tight end in this year’s class for the 2012 NFL Draft, although Dwayne Allen of Clemson is likely the best candidate. That said, plenty of teams will be searching for another tight end receiving threat given the success of the New England Patriots with Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkoswki. But since the Stanford product will not be available due to injury for this week’s NFL Combine, he might end up slipping a bit.
Rob Rang writes, "It sounds like Fleener is targeting Stanford’s March 23 Pro Day instead. Rang reports that Fleener suffered the injury during the Fiesta Bowl in January. Fleener has reportedly recovered “sufficiently” to train ahead of the draft, but has not fully prepared for Combine workouts. He will still travel to Indianapolis to go through interviews and medical testing."
The Chiefs are among teams who could take a look at Fleener given the health concerns around Tony Moeaki and his return from injury. Even if he’s fine, Moeaki has never been a model of health and stability, so the Chiefs could use another option. Plus if both are healthy, Brian Daboll could make things interesting in offensive formations with both players.
