NFL Mock Draft: Luke Kuechly Is 'Slam Dunk' For Kansas City Chiefs Per Todd McShay

In Todd McShay’s latest mock for ESPN leading up to the 2012 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select a “slam dunk to fill a great need.” It’s hard to argue with anything that nets that sort of description, but given the void next to Derrick Johnson on the inside of the Chiefs defense and the presence of Luke Kuechly, McShay believes it’s a potential marriage made in heaven.

McShay writes, “Kuechly is a slam dunk to fill a big need. He can be plugged in next to Derrick Johnson immediately to form one of the best 3-4 inside tandems in the league. He’s instinctive, productive and athletic, and he could allow for some scheme versatility.”

Kuechly was second in the nation in tackles in 2009 as a freshman (yes, a freshman) after replacing Mark Herzlich at Boston College. He then led the nation in tackles the last two seasons. He’s a three-time All American who took the BC tackles record in three seasons with 532. In the process, he won the Butkus Award, Bronco Nagurski Award and the Lombardi Award. In short, it’s hard to argue with the tape on this one.

If the Chiefs can add this kind of proven impact performer on a defense that already has Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali among its linebackers, the Chiefs could really become a playoff caliber unit along with the return of Berry, the presence of Brandon Flowers and the development of Justin Houston and the defensive line.
