The Kansas City Chiefs have been checking out a multitude of quarterbacks in the 2012 NFL Draft class, so it’s not surprising to see them grabbing one in the latest Drafttek mock in the second round. Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden is the pick, and it’s a relatively safe one that would be applauded by most if the Chiefs are able to land him in the middle of the second at No. 44.
The Drafttek report reads, “The Chiefs continue their safe drafting ways in round two. Brandon Weeden represents the best QB value at this point. Yes, due to his age, he only projects to have about an eight year career. However, he is a first round talent in an older body. He can make all the throws. Weeden needs to learn to operate under center, and at his age, needs to come up to speed fast. He should be starting in year two. Is this the beginning of the end of Matt Cassel? It may very well be.”
The Chiefs added Brady Quinn this offseason to a one-year free agent deal and were reportedly in on Drew Stanton as well. It’s hard to tell what their vision there is at starter besides Matt Cassel, so the competition must be coming from the draft. After all, the team went public with their goal to push Cassel with better competition at the starting quarterback position. It’s hard to believe that Quinn is the result of that pursuit.
Weeden would add a strong starter from Oklahoma State who should make a fairly smooth transition to the next level based on his age and maturity compared to other young starters immediately thrown in.
