NFL Draft 2012: Chiefs' Top Need Is Nose Tackle According To Pro Football Weekly

The Kansas City Chiefs came into the 2012 NFL offseason with one primary need on their team above any other at right tackle. The signing of Eric Winston alleviated that concern, and with the NFL Draft approaching, they can now turn their attention elsewhere. Pro Football Weekly reports that the nose tackle position is the next they should address when looking ahead to the late April draft.

Playing a 3-4 defense, the Chiefs need run stuffers in the middle of the "D." With no proven nose tackle on the roster, an anchor for the defensive line becomes a top need. The Chiefs drafted a tackle last year in Jerrell Powe, though conditioning issues resulted in the sixth-round pick seeing the field in only one game last season. Veteran NT Kelly Gregg, who was signed last offseason, is a free agent and, at age 35, likely on his last legs. Adding a dynamic player in the middle of the line — similar to what Pioli had in New England with Vince Wilfork — would make the Chiefs’ defense one of the league’s premier units.

It’s impossible to tell if there is a Wilfork like player in this year’s draft. Every top nose tackle the Chiefs could conceivably select at the No. 11 position has question marks — from LSU’s Michael Brockers to Memphis’ Dontari Poe. It might be a better move for the Chiefs to wait until the middle of round two to select a Devon Still or Brandon Thompson. No matter what round it’s addressed, it’s clear that most people believe the Chiefs will address the defensive interior early on.
