Kansas City Chiefs' Romeo Crennel, "A Guy That We Can Get Behind"

Just this past week on Chop Talk, a weekly radio show that airs on Sunday nights, Jay Binkley (@3guysinagarage) of 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City joined us to talk about what he's seen so far at Chiefs training camp. One of the great points that Jay made was in regards to the players support of Romeo Crennel as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Jay had this to say regarding a conversation he had with Chiefs' safety, Kendrick Lewis.

"But I’ll be honest with you, these players love playing for Romeo Crennel. I mean, to a man, when you even bring him up… I had a chance to talk with Kendrick Lewis and I asked him, you know, what kind of leader Romeo Crennel is...

"He’s great man, he is players coach." I said what do you mean by players coach, does that mean: no discipline and all fun? He goes, "No, no, no… plenty of discipline, but a guy that we can get behind."

And that’s so true to these guys man, I mean they were chanting his name in the locker room last year, you didn’t hear anybody complaining that Todd Haley was gone, which tells me everything."

It's one thing to play for a coach and it's another thing to believe in your coach and be 'behind your coach'. This isn't a slam on Todd Haley but when it's not working, it's not working. Things weren't working for Haley in Kansas City and the tides turned towards the guy that led them to a 2-1 record down the stretch in Romeo Crennel.

If the players are truly behind the man that is now leading this franchise, and by all accounts they are, it's setup the Chiefs to have the opportunity to have a pretty special season. Great moments are built from great opportunity and the work that these players and Scott Pioli, Romeo Crennel and company have done since arriving in Kansas City has put them in the position to do something special. It seems like some momentum is building around this team and it's hard not to get caught up in it.

There were plenty more great points made on the 90-minute show and you can listen to last weeks' show in its' entirety by following this link. Chop Talk airs live on Sunday nights from 7-8:30pm CT.
