Royals Down Red Sox 3-1 In 14-Inning Marathon

A 2 hour and 21 minute rain delay wasn't enough for the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals as the two teams had to go to 14 innings on Monday night at Fenway Park before the Royals gutted out a 3-1 victory over Boston.

Shockingly the Royals got a quality start from Kyle Davies who pitched six innings allowing just one run on five hits. However his story was overshadowed by five relief pitchers combing for eight innings of shut-out baseball as Kansas City improves to 43-59. The Royals have now won five of their last six games.

The Red Sox had the winning run at third multiple times from the ninth inning on, but the Royals pitching staff was able to grind it out and obtain the scrappy victory.

Finally in the top of the 14th inning Kansas City started their drive to victory as Eric Hosmer doubled off Randy Williams to lead off the inning. Hosmer came around to score when Mike Aviles bunted a ball over Red Sox first basemen Adrian Gonzalez who was charging in from first base. It was a safety squeeze that went awry, but the Royals certainly were still happy with the outcome. Kansas City added a second run in the inning on an Alcides Escobar sacrifice fly.

Louis Coleman (1-2) picked up his first major league victory, while Joakim Soria earned his 18th save of the season and 150th of his career.

Melky Cabrera lead the Royals with four hits, while Hosmer contributed three.
