A solid start from Luke Hochevar was spoiled as Blake Wood allowed a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth
It all came down to one pitch on Monday evening at Casey Kotchman hit the first pitch off the bottom of the ninth inning off reliever Blake Wood for his seventh home run of the season, giving the Rays a 2-1 walk off win over the Royals.
Jeremy Hellickson and Luke Hochevar were locked into a pitchers duel for much of the evening as Hochevar went 7.0 innings allowing one run on five hits. He would strike out seven. Hellickson lasted 7.1 innings allowing a run on six hits, also striking out seven Kansas City batters. Neither pitcher would factor into the decision.
The lone Royals run came on an Eric Hosmer RBI single in the first inning while Kotchman had an RBI single in the seventh and then the winning home run in the bottom of the ninth.
Wood falls to 5-1, while former Royal Kyle Farnsworth improves to 4-1 with the win. Kansas City now stands at 49-66 and just 18-34 away from Kauffman Stadium.
