Kansas City Royals Designate Kila Ka`aihue For Assignment

Kansas City Royals fans will no longer have to worry about trying to say or spell Kila Ka`aihue's name as the Royals today designated the 27-year-old first basemen/designated hitter for assignment. The move was made so that Kansas City could add pitcher Kelvin Herrera to the active roster.

After slowly working his way up the organizational ladder Ka`aihue really burst onto the scene in 2008 when he batted .314 with 37 home runs and 100 RBI between Northwest Arkansas and Omaha. Though he did have his moments at the major league level he never was able to consistently produce. After earning the starting job at first base with Kansas City out of spring training this year, he hit just .195 in 23 games, with two home runs and 6 RBI. He was demoted to Omaha at the beginning of May with the promotion of Eric Hosmer, and the Royals haven't looked back since.

In 87 career games with Kansas City, Ka`aihue batted .216 with 11 home runs and 32 RBI. As his time ends in Kansas City, another team will likely give Ka`aihue a shot, whether it be through a trade or picking his up as a free agent should he pass through waivers.

Kansas City Royals Announce Six September Call-Ups Including Lorenzo Cain

After the Monday evening’s victory over the Detroit Tigers, the Royals announced six September call-ups from the Omaha team. With the Storm Chasers wrapping up their season on Monday night as well, Kansas City is making their call-ups later than many other organizations.

Those who will be joining the Royals for the game on Tuesday evening are pitchers Vin Mazzaro, Sean O`Sullivan, and Kelvin Herrera. Catcher Manuel Pina and outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Jarrod Dyson will be coming up as well. From the group, Herrera is the only one who will be making their major league debut. Cain has played in the majors, but this will be his first experience with the Royals. He had previously received playing time with the Milwaukee Brewers before coming over in the Zack Greinke trade during the winter.

Mazzaro or O`Sullivan will likely receive a start, with the possibly that both may do so. Herrera is a 21-year old 5’10" right-hander that has progressed from Class A Burlington in 2010 all the way to the majors to close out 2011. In 2011 Herrera was 7-1 with a 1.60 ERA during three stops in the system. Over 67.2 innings he struck out 70 while walking just 15.

Pina appeared in four games this summer with the Royals and had three hits in 14 at-bats.

Cain comes with likely the most anticipation as he batted .312/.380/.497 this year at Omaha with 16 home runs and 81 RBI. He also stole 16 bases and is well known for his speed in centerfield.
