Jarrod Dyson's Double Gives Luis Mendoza And Royals Enough Support In 2-1 Victory Over White Sox

Luis Mendoza pitched 7 1/3 strong innings as Kansas City was able to scrape together two runs on three hits in a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Just three games remain for the Royals this season.

With Chicago White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd cruising through the Royals lineup throwing five innings of no-hit baseball, Kansas City still found themselves entrenched in a scoreless ballgame. Lorenzo Cain and Chris Getz would begin the sixth with back-to-back singles and then both eventually came around to score on Jarrod Dyson's double giving the Royals a 2-0 lead.

Two runs ended up being all the support the visitors needed as Luis Mendoza once again put together a great start. Mendoza would finish the day with 7.2 innings pitched, allowing one run on five hits. Mendoza featured good movement on his sinker and was able to hit the corners for much of the day.

Kansas City has been hitting remarkably well in the past two weeks, but on Sunday the two teams combined for only nine hits. The Royals tallied just three, all coming in the sixth inning.

Chicago would score in the seventh inning when Paul Konerko doubled, scoring Gordon Beckham. Konerko now had 105 RBI's on the year.

Mendoza improved to 2-0 with the win, while Greg Holland picked up a four-out save. For Holland it was his fourth save of the season. White Sox starter Gavin Floyd was charged with the loss, falling to 12-13.

The Royals now move their season record to 70-89 and head to Minnesota to face the Twins for a three-game series to close out the season. The Twins are 61-98 overall, so if Kansas City can win at least two of the three, the Royals can take solace in knowing they were the team that gave Minnesota their 100th loss of the year. If the Royals can sweep the Twins, they will also avoid 90 losses for the first time since 2008.

Monday evening's game begins at 7:10 (CST) with Felipe Paulino (3-10) facing Kevin Slowey (0-7). Sean O`'Sullivan and Bruce Chen are slated to pitch the final two games of the year for the Royals.
