The Kansas City Royals finished the 2012 season with a 1-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night in Kansas City.
A masterful start by Luis Mendoza (8-10) was spoiled as the Royals weren't able to manage a run on the evening. The righty struck out six and allowed just one run over seven innings of work. He allowed the game's only run when Austin Jackson doubled home Omar Infante in the fifth inning.
The Tigers (88-74) claimed the win after already clinching the American League Central title. Luis Marte (1-0) got the win in 3-1/3 innings of relief, and Detroit prepares to play the A.L. West champion Oakland Athletics in the first round of the playoffs.
The Royals finish 2012 72-90, just one game better than the team's 2011 record. Designated hitter Billy Butler closes the season as the team's triple crown winner, posting the Royals' best batting average, home run total, and RBI total. Mendoza held the best ERA among Kansas City pitchers at 4.23.

The Kansas City Royals opened their final series of the year with a loss, going down to the Detroit Tigers, 6-3. The Tigers took Bruce Chen for six runs on ten hits over 5 2/3 innings, and the Royals' offense was unable to answer.
Down 6-0 entering the sixth, Kansas City made an attempt at a rally. Alex Gordon led off with a solo home run, and after Billy Butler doubled to deep center Detroit starter Rick Porcello walked the bases loaded. That opportunity was lost when Jeff Francoeur grounded into a double play, scoring one, and David Lough struck out to end the inning. Francoeur picked up an RBI with a single in the eighth, but that was the end of Kansas City's offense.
Louis Coleman, Vin Mazzaro, Tommy Hottovy and Aaron Crow all combined in relief to hold the Tigers without a run, but without the Royals' bats backing them up it went to waste.
Game 2 of the series is Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. CT.

Able to play the role of spoiler over the final three games of the year, the Kansas City Royals will look to left-hander Bruce Chen on Monday evening for Game 1 against the Detroit Tigers.
Chen was knocked from the mound in the seventh inning after allowing 10 hits against the Tigers on Sept. 25, but was electric against Detroit hitters the last time he faced them from Kauffman Stadium. In arguably his most dominant start of 2012, Chen held the Tigers scoreless over eight innings of four-hit ball to earn the victory back on Aug. 29.
Facing a hitting machine like Detroit's Miguel Cabrera however, Chen will need to be extra careful on Monday if he wants to snatch his 12th victory for the third straight season. Cabrera remains stuck in a tie for the league's home run total with Josh Hamilton at 43, but has knocked out three career bombs against Chen in his time with Detroit.
