Royals lefty pitcher Tim Collins will receive the Ben Mondor Award in January of 2013. The award, named after the former owner of the Pawtucket Red Sox, has been presented to the New England player of the year since 1979 -- Collins is originally from Worcester, Mass.
He's certainly put up good enough numbers to deserve the award; not only has the Royals reliever put up a 5-4 record with a 3.38 ERA so far in 2012 after 71 appearances with the team, but he also set a team record with 93 strikeouts. That number is the most ever thrown by a left-handed reliever in Royals history. He'll have two more chances to add to those numbers before the season ends for his team, as Kansas City continues its final series against the Detroit Tigers through Wednesday.
Former winners of the Ben Monder Award include Jeff Bagwell, Mo Vaughn and Carlos Pena.
