Kansas City fans witness history, show their respect

More than 30,000 fans were in attendance Wednesday night in Kansas City to watch Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera wrap up the first Triple Crown in 45 years. And though Cabrera was in the opposing uniform, Royals fans were gracious to witness history and applauded Cabrera, writes Dick Kaegel at MLB.com.

Cabrera, who led the American League with 44 HRs, 139 RBIs and a .330 batting average, exited with two outs in the fourth to a standing ovation from the Kansas City crowd, something Royals manager Ned Yost said is characteristic of the hometown crowd:

"Our fans are special in that way. It was like the response they gave Chipper Jones at the All-Star Game. Our fans are very knowledgeable. Everybody -- I was, our whole team -- was giving him a standing ovation. What he did was nothing less than simply amazing."

Tigers starter Justin Verlander appreciated the gesture from the visiting crowd as well:

"We were just fans, really, standing on top of the dugout and cheering him on just like everybody else here. I don't think he's very liked in this stadium, and these fans gave him a standing ovation. That's pretty special, and I think it's great that they recognized what he did."
