The Kansas City Royals traded left-handed pitcher Tommy Hottovy to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later and cash considerations, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.

Hottovy spent most of last season in the minors and was designated by the team on Friday, which gave the Royals 10 days to trade, release or send him through waivers.

Hottovy was 0-0 with a 2.89 ERA in nine games with the Royals last season. He was 2-2 with seven saves and a 2.52 ERA in 41 games at Triple-A Omaha.

Hottovy is 31 years old and a native of Kansas City. He played college baseball at Wichita State and signed with the Royals last November after spending eight seasons in the Boston Red Sox system.

The Royals also traded right-hander Jeremy Jeffress to the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations. Jeffress was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 13 games with Kansas City last season. Jeffress was originally acquired by the Royals in the Zack Greinke trade.
