Wade Davis wants to be 'extremely aggressive' next season with Royals

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Royals' new left-hander intends to take the tenacity he developed as a reliever for the Rays last season and use it to his advantage as a starter in Kansas City.

Kansas CIty Royals newly acquired left-hander Wade Davis is happy to call Kauffman Stadium home and plans to be "extremely aggressive" on the mound next season, according to Dick Kaegel of MLB.com.

The 27-year-old Davis, who was acquired long with right-hander James Shields and a player to be named later (or cash) last week when the Royals shipped four top prospects to the Tampa Bay Rays, thinks he'll enjoy pitching in Kauffman much more than the turf-covered Tropicana Dome.

Via MLB.com:

"It's good in a lot of ways," he said. "You keep the ball in the ballpark and they have a pretty good outfield that can run everything down, so it gives you a lot of confidence to stay in the strike zone all the time, don't fall behind in the count, continue to throw strikes and not give in and walk anybody."

Davis went 12-10 in 2010 and 11-10 in 2011 as a starter for the Rays before moving to the bullpen last season. The 6'5 left-hander thrived as a reliever in 2012, going 3-0, with a 2.43 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 70⅓ innings. He's looking forward to taking the tenacity he built as a reliever and implementing it in a starter's role for the Royals in 2013.

"I plan on being extremely aggressive," he said. "I think that's something I learned last year. Being extremely aggressive, not giving any credit to anybody, just attacking everybody the same way and not giving in and trusting everything that I have."

Davis joins Shields, and right-handers Jeremy Guthrie and Ervin Santana as new faces in the Royals' much-improved starting rotation next season.
