The Royals promising young catcher is headed back to Kansas City for further medical evaluations on his sore knee.
Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez left spring training on Wednesday after injuring his knee before the Royals spring training game with the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday:
Heading to KC today -- Thanks to all the fans for the support . I will work hard to be back as soon as possible - God bless you
— Salvador Perez (@SalvadorPerez15) March 14, 2012
He tried to play in the first inning but left with a noticeable limp and was replaced in the lineup by Cody Clark.
The 21-year old catcher hit .331/.361/.473 in 39 games with Kansas City last season, showing enough promise that the franchise locked him up with a 5-year $7 million contract in the off-season.
However, a knee injury is never a good sign for a young player, especially a catcher who spends most of his time crouching behind the plate:
#Royals I think there is legitimate concern about Salvador Perez' sore knee. He's among my highly rated C this season. We Have to watch it.
