Late Thursday afternoon, the Kansas City Royals announced they have placed starting centerfielder Lorenzo Cain on the 15-day disabled list. Cain, was injured early in the second game of the Oakland Athletics series, after he ran into the wall making a spectacular catch. The injury was listed as a left groin strain.
In five games, Cain was 2-for-15 at the plate with a walk and an RBI. He had struck out five times.
Filling his spot on the roster will be 27-year old Jarrod Dyson, who was recalled from Omaha. Through seven games at Omaha, Dyson was batting .364/.400/.485 with two doubles, a triple, and six stolen bases.
"Mr Zoom Biya" appeared in 26 games with Kansas City last season in which he posted a slash line of .205/.308/.227 with 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts. In his major league career he has 20 stolen bases while being caught just twice.
It sounds as if the Royals will start either Dyson or Jason Bourgeois in centerfield until Cain returns, with Mitch Maier still coming on the bench.
After an off day today, the Royals return to action on Friday for the home opener, with Luke Hochevar earning the start against Derek Lowe and the Cleveland Indians.
