The Royals needed 15 innings and a Yuniesky Betancourt home run to defeat the Cardinals 5-3

Kansas City Royals second baseman Chris Getz left Sunday's 15-inning loss to the St. Louis Cardinals with an apparent leg strain. Initially it was thought the injury might keep Getz out of the lineup for only a few days, but the injury seems far worse than that.
The news got worse after the game for the Royals when Getz was spotted leaving Sunday's game in a bot:
#Royals 2B Chris Getz exits clubhouse wearing a boot on his left leg. Will be examined tomorrow but doesn't look good.

For precautionary reasons the Royals pulled second baseman Johnny Giavotella from his current game at Triple-A Omaha once the news broke about Getz getting injured. Giavotella is now likely to be called up to earn some playing time while Getz is out.

Yuniesky Betancourt's two run home run in the 15th inning was the difference in Kansas City's 5-3 win over the St Louis Cardinals in 15 innings. Betancourt wasn't even in the original starting lineup and only came in as an injury replacement for the injured Chris Getz. Betancourt briefly gave the Royals the lead in the 14th with a RBI double.
Kansas City used eight different pitchers with closer Jonathan Broxton picking up the win while allowing two hits and a run in two innings of work. Luis Mendoza got the start and was solid allowing two runs and six hits in six innings of work. Eduardo Sanchez takes the loss for the Cardinals after giving up three runs and three hits in two innings of work.
Mike Moustakas went 3 for 6 with a run scored for the Royals. Alex Gordon was 0 for 3 but walked five times in the game. Matt Holiday and Adron Chambers had two hits for the Cardinals.

Johnny Giavotella hasn't really gotten a good chance to showcase his wares at the Major League level just yet for the Kansas City Royals. While he hasn't impressed in spot duty, it takes time to learn how to hit at each stage of the climb to the Majors and the Royals prospect deserves another shot soon. Given the injury to Chris Getz today, it look as if that might be happening.
Coincidence or not: 2B Johnny Giavotella pulled from Class AAA Omaha's game at Nashville shortly after Chris Getz suffered in injury.
— Bob Dutton (@Royals_Report) June 17, 2012
Giavotella is hitting only .217 on the season for KC and his overall OPS at .521 is abysmal. However the sample size of 69 at bats so far in 2012 is too small to make any real judgment calls about his future. It will be interesting to see how much time he's given at the ML level if the team does officially call him up. Perhaps Getz is a bit more hurt than originally believed.

The Kansas City Royals cannot seem to catch a break with injuries of any kind in 2012, and second base also continues to be a carousel of starters. Both of those are further in flux with the news that Chris Getz could miss some time due to injury after hurting himself in Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
#Royals 2B Chris Getz left today's game with a left lateral lower leg strain. He will be re-evaluated tomorrow.
— Kansas City Royals (@Royals) June 17, 2012
Getz has started the majority of games at second base this season for the Royals with others like Johnny Giavotella, Irving Falu and Yuniesky Betancourt also earning time.
It will be interesting to see if the Royals recall Giavotella with this news or just allow Getz to heal on his own on the active roster.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday and catcher Yadier Molina combined for nine RBIs in the their 10-7 win over the Kansas City Royals. Holliday went 4-for-5 including a home run and five RBIs; while Molina also hit a home run while going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
The Cardinals got to Royals starter Bruce Chen early as he only lasted 1.2 innings and in that time he allowed six runs, seven hits and a pair of home runs before getting pulled for Nate Adcock. By the time Chen was out the Royals trailed 6-2, but they crawled back in the game and took a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Cardinals came back to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh when Holliday hit a RBI single and Molina contributed the other run on a RBI single.
The Royals were unable to get back in the game as the Cardinals brought in Mitchell Boggs and Jason Motte who gave up no runs and allowed only two hits over the final two innings.

The Kansas City Royals were able to squeak out a 3-2 victory from the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday as they try and one-up their interstate rivals. (Random, is it me or is it weird that both kansas City and St. Louis technically reside in two states? Just me? Okay.) Bruce Chen will try to keep things rolling for the Royals on the mound while Joe Kelly gets the start for the Cardinals.
The Royals made no changes in the field, but the Cardinals have made a few. Shane Robinson will start at center, Tyler Greene will start at second, and Allen Craig will move to first base.

Kansas City's defacto ace Bruce Chen takes the mound on Saturday afternoon, as the Kansas City Royals look to win their second straight game over the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals.
The Royals won Friday night's contest over St. Louis 3-2 in dramatic fashion. With two outs in the ninth inning, Tyler Greene stole second base, and took third base since the attempted throw to catch Greene stealing sailed into centerfield. The throw to try to gun down Greene at third base was overthrown too, and Greene attempted to score -- but was thrown out, ending the game.
Chen will look to even up his record on the season on Saturday, as he comes into the outing with a 5-6 record to go along with a 1.23 WHIP.
Chen will be opposed by rookie Joe Kelly, who will be making his second major league start. Kelly did not factor into the decision in his first start, when he pitched five innings, scattering seven hits and a walk, and giving up only one run.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. CT. Televised coverage can be found on FOX Sports Kansas City and FOX Sports Midwest.

As strong as the Kansas City Royals farm system has been and continues to be, it seems most Royals fans still question the future direction of the club. The reasons is a lack of confidence in the people running the show.
Ned Yost, the Royals manager, utilizes odd line-ups, sends Valentine’s Day cards to the sacrifice bunt and makes viewer scratch their heads at least three times per game. Dayton Moore, the team’s general manager, gathers the best prospect bunch in the game and then trades some for a journeyman 32-year-old back-up catcher with back spasms. It’s one thing to have the resources, but another to know how to use them. KC’s leadership hasn’t yet proved the latter.
The latest player transaction is among the more baffling and serves as the perfect example of why things still feel suspicious. The club announced earlier this week the arrival of Roman Colon, the newest member of the Royals bullpen. He was 3-1 in AAA Omaha with a 3.34 ERA in 21 games with 5 saves.
On the outside those might seem decent numbers at least, but his WHIP is atrocious at 1.483 and he’s always been susceptible to the walk and home run both. Guess you could even say he’s susceptible to the batter. He’s now 32, looked poor in parts of six previous major league seasons and has bounced around all over the minors and majors trying to make it. He spent the last year in Korea.
So of course, Moore believes he’s the best addition to the squad, even after watching him develop a 5.33 ERA in 48 games with the Royals already in 2009-10. Then Ned Yost believes he’s the right guy to bring into the game last night as well. This is from Royals Review’s game recap from the first game of the series:
Roman Colon, inserted on the roster for no explicable reason, was inserted into this game for no explicable reason. Not surprisingly, he gave up the only two runs the Cards would score all night. Fortunately last year’s All-Star – Aaron Crow – and most likely this year’s All-Star – Jonathan Broxton – shut things down for a fourth straight victory for our Royals.
Therein lies the other issue. Not only does Colon not belong on the roster, but then Yost goes ahead and uses him. There’s no reason for either, but somehow both occur. If the Royals need a development project to try to bring back to the Majors after going overseas, why does Dayton Moore go back to a well he’s been chasing since his days with the Atlanta Braves (yes, Colon is an old prospect from the Dominican Republic the Braves signed when he was there).
This isn’t so much about Colon as it is about the lack of confidence that fans have and the reasons they hold such a view. The tools are here for long-term success, but if players are going to be mishandled (Johnny Giavotella failing to get a chance to start on a consistent basis), and others placed in odd situations (signing Colon), then the Royals might have to be better than their handlers.
Some things are too good to screw up. Unfortunately the Royals might have to be that good in order to overlook the mistakes that Yost and Moore continue to make.
The Kansas City Royals had a strong pitching performance by Vin Mazzaro who pitched six shutout innings to help the Royals to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Royals offense got to Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Lohse by scoring a pair of runs in the second and third innings, and then another run in the seventh inning.
The Royals had a 3-0 lead and it was nearly blown by Roman Colon who gave up a pair of runs in only 2/3 of an inning to make it a 3-2 game. Jose Mijares came into relief for Colon and did not allow any more runs to close out the inning.
Aaron Crow and Jonathan Broxton closed out the game for the Royals over the final two innings for the win. Broxton pitched the ninth and earned his 16th save of the season.
The Royals begin a series against the in-state rival Cardinals on Friday, and a former Royal is the headline regarding the lineups.
Carlos Beltran wasn't expected to be in Friday's lineup after missing Thursday with a stomach virus, but he indeed will be playing in St. Louis on Friday, as listed in the announced lineups.
Here is the Royals lineup:
1. Alex Gordon, LF
2. Chris Getz, 2B
3. Eric Hosmer, 1B
4. Jeff Francoeur, RF
5. Mike Moustakas, 3B
6. Brayan Pena, C
7. Alcides Escoba, SS
8. Jarrod Dyson, CF
9. Vin Mazzaro, P
Here is the Cardinals lineup:

2. Allen Craig, RF
3. Matt Holliday, LF
4. Carlos Beltran, CF

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran has been under weather for the past few days and as a result, he won't be in the Cardinals' lineup for the series opener against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.
Beltran was out of the lineup on Thursday battling what the teams referred to as a stomach virus, one that he was also apparently suffering from the Cardinals' win on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox. He was actually one of the key players on Wednesday, recording his 19th homer of the year for the only score of the game and making a difficult diving catch in right field in the sixth inning.
