Kansas City Royals second baseman Chris Getz left Sunday's 15-inning loss to the St. Louis Cardinals with an apparent leg strain. Initially it was thought the injury might keep Getz out of the lineup for only a few days, but the injury seems far worse than that.
The news got worse after the game for the Royals when Getz was spotted leaving Sunday's game in a bot:
#Royals 2B Chris Getz exits clubhouse wearing a boot on his left leg. Will be examined tomorrow but doesn't look good.

For precautionary reasons the Royals pulled second baseman Johnny Giavotella from his current game at Triple-A Omaha once the news broke about Getz getting injured. Giavotella is now likely to be called up to earn some playing time while Getz is out.

Johnny Giavotella hasn't really gotten a good chance to showcase his wares at the Major League level just yet for the Kansas City Royals. While he hasn't impressed in spot duty, it takes time to learn how to hit at each stage of the climb to the Majors and the Royals prospect deserves another shot soon. Given the injury to Chris Getz today, it look as if that might be happening.
Coincidence or not: 2B Johnny Giavotella pulled from Class AAA Omaha's game at Nashville shortly after Chris Getz suffered in injury.

Giavotella is hitting only .217 on the season for KC and his overall OPS at .521 is abysmal. However the sample size of 69 at bats so far in 2012 is too small to make any real judgment calls about his future. It will be interesting to see how much time he's given at the ML level if the team does officially call him up. Perhaps Getz is a bit more hurt than originally believed.

The Kansas City Royals cannot seem to catch a break with injuries of any kind in 2012, and second base also continues to be a carousel of starters. Both of those are further in flux with the news that Chris Getz could miss some time due to injury after hurting himself in Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
#Royals 2B Chris Getz left today's game with a left lateral lower leg strain. He will be re-evaluated tomorrow.

Getz has started the majority of games at second base this season for the Royals with others like Johnny Giavotella, Irving Falu and Yuniesky Betancourt also earning time.
It will be interesting to see if the Royals recall Giavotella with this news or just allow Getz to heal on his own on the active roster.
