The Kansas City Royals suffer a three game sweep to their interstate rivals with a 11-8 loss on Sunday. Both starters Jonathan Sanchez and Lance Lynn were knocked around in the game but it was the Cardinals that got the better of the Royals bullpen late.
Victor Marte picks up the win for the Cardinals after Lance Lynn struggled to his worst start of the season. Lynn allowed nine hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings but takes home a no decision. Kansas City's Tim Collins takes the loss after giving up three hits and five runs in an 1 2/3 innings of relief. Starter Jonathan Sanchez wasn't any better giving up six runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. Sanchez walked six batters while striking out only three.
The loss overshadows a big day offensively for third baseman Mike Moustakas who went 3 for 5 with two homers and three RBIs. Billy Butler and Jeff Francouer also homered in the loss. Carlos Beltran drove in three runs while Allen Craig had two hits for the Cardinals.
Kansas City out hit St. Louis 14-8 on Sunday but walked nine Cardinals batters in the game.

For the second straight game the pitching for the Kansas City Royals did not perform well as they fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2. Saturday's starter was Luis Mendoza and he lasted only 4.1 innings while giving up seven hits and four runs.
The fifth inning is when troubles began for Mendozza as he started giving up hit after hit and allowed three runs before being pulled for Kelvin Herrera who was able to get out of the inning. Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning the Royals were trailing 5-0, and they did make a comeback by scoring a pair of runs on an Alex Gordon RBI-triple and then when Yuniesky Betancourt knocked in Gordon to make it 5-2.
That is all the offense that the Royals were able to come up with while the Cardinals put up another two runs in the top of the seventh when Allen Craig hit a two-run home run to give the Cardinals a 7-2 lead. Craig was able to put up another run for the Cardinals in the ninth inning when he hit a RBI-single to centerfield.

The second time wasn't the charm for Luis Mendoza.
Mendoza, who pitcher well last Sunday against the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, didn't escape the fifth inning, as the Cardinals have jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Royals after the first five innings of play.
Mendoza got himself into trouble in the third inning, issuing a two-out walk to Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal. Jon Jay followed up Furcal's walk with a single, before Matt Holliday singled, scoring Furcal, and giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
St. Louis knocked Mendoza out in the fifth inning. Mendoza retired Tony Cruz, who is playing in place of Yadier Molina, to start the third. The wheels fell off the wagon from there, though, as four straight singles from Daniel Descalso, Rafael Furcal, Jon Jay and Matt Holliday gave the Cards a 3-0 lead.
Former Royals outfielder Carlos Beltran singled off of Kelvin Herrera, who relieved Mendoza, giving the Cards a 4-0 edge.
Kansas City's offense, meanwhile, has been unable to solve the Cardinals' co-ace Adam Wainwright. Alex Gordon singled on a bunt to Wainwright in the first inning, but the Royals would not record another hit until the bottom half of the fifth, when Alcides Escobar singled. Through five innings, Wainwright has allowed just two hits and has issued just one walk while striking out three.
We'll see if Kansas City can mount a comeback, but once again, it looks like KC's bullpen will get taxed.

Adam Wainwright and Luis Mendoza square off for the second time in less than a week on Saturday, as the Kansas City Royals play host to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Neither Mendoza or Wainwright factored into the decision last Sunday, but both pitch effectively in a game that Kansas City ultimately won in extra innings.
Both Mike Matheny and Ned Yost have announced the starting lineups for Saturday's game, and they are as follows:
SS Rafael Furcal
CF Jon Jay
DH Matt Holliday
RF Carlos Beltran
1B Allen Craig
3B David Freese
LF Matt Carpenter
C Tony Cruz
2B Daniel Descalso
SP Adam Wainwright
LF Alex Gordon
2B Yuniesky Betancourt
DH Billy Butler
1B Eric Hosmer
RF Jeff Francoeur
3B Mike Moustakas
SS Alcides Escobar
CF Jarrod Dyson
C Humberto Quintero
SP Luis Mendoza
Yadier Molina gets the day off for the Cardinals, as Tony Cruz will be behind the dish catching Wainwright. We'll see if Kansas City tries to take advantage of that fact on the basepaths.

Friday didn't quite go as planned for the Kansas City Royals, as they opened up a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Vin Mazarro, who pitched very well against St. Louis last week, couldn't escape the second inning, as the Cardinals routed Kansas City, 11-4.
On Saturday, the Royals will send Luis Mendoza (2-3, 4.69 ERA, 1.60 WHIP) to the mound, as KC looks to rebound from a disastrous Friday night.
Mendoza last pitched on Sunday, when he pitched six innings in St. Louis, allowing just two runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out five. Both runs scored off of Mendoza came via the long ball, as Matt Holliday and Allen Craig went deep off of the righty.
Kansas City's offense will take on Adam Wainwright (5-7, 4.46 ERA, 1.31 WHIP), who, like Mendoza, last pitched on Sunday. Wainwright pitched seven innings against the Royals, giving up just one run on five hits and three walks. He struck out eight Royals in the contest.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:15 at Kauffman Stadium. Televised coverage can be found either on FOX Sports Kansas City or the MLB Network.

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Vin Mazzaro had a tough outing against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday night while lasting only 1.2 innings, and in that time Mazzaro gave up six hits and allowed seven runs. Roman Colon came into relief for Mazzaro but he did not fare much better as he allowed four runs and eight hits in 4.1 innings.
After the second inning, the Royals dug themselves into a 10-0 hole and could not recover from that type of deficit. The Cardinals were led by former Royals outfielder Carlos Beltran who had all of his offense in the first two innings with a pair of doubles and four RBI; Beltran was making his first appearance in Kansas City since he was traded back in 2004.
This was just one of those games were nothing went right for the Royals, and Mazzaro's start was the polar opposite compared to his last start against the Cardinals where pitched six shutout innings.
The one positive that the Royals can take from this game is the return of catcher Salvador Perez, who had been on the disabled list since spring training with a torn knee ligament. Perez went 2 for 4 with a monster two-run homer in the fourth inning.

The Kansas City Royals are already feeling the positive momentum and wind in the team’s sails. Now they’re also getting some positive player contributions back again. Salvador Perez was inked to a long-term deal to be the team’s starting catcher, but then knee issues came in and sidelined him for nearly half of the 2012 season. Now the Royals will likely have him back very soon.
"I feel great. I don’t feel (anything) in my knee," Perez said to FOXSports.com earlier this week. "No pain. (I’m) not tired. I’ll catch my second back-to-back games (Tuesday and Wednesday). When I feel 100 percent, maybe (I’ll) go up again."
The Royals could certainly use his bat in the line-up. The back-ups in Brayan Pena and Humberto Quintero have only hurt the Royals in the everyday line-up. Quintero is batting .230 with a .596 OPS. Pena, in almost equal time to Quintero, has a .250 average with a .618 OPS. Those are horrible numbers that equal as close to an automatic out as the Royals could generate in their line-up.
Perez has already earned a hot bat in the minors on his current rehab. Currently he’s batting .340 in Omaha and went 4 for 4 on Wednesday.

The Royals took two out of three in the I-70 Series in St. Louis, and now return home with the benefit of an extra bat against the defending Champs.
