Royals vs. Indians: Kansas City plays final road game of the season in Cleveland

The Kansas City Royals (71-87) take the field on Sunday coming off a draining 7-6 win in 14 innings over the Cleveland Indians (66-92) on Saturday night, and needing two wins in the final four games of their season to prevent a fourth straight 90-loss campaign. Kansas City has lost at least 90 games in seven of the past eight years.

Luke Hochevar (8-15, 5.43 ERA) will take the hill for the Royals. The right-hander has lost his last two starts and is 1-6 with a 6.31 ERA in his last nine. Hochevar is 2-1 with a 6.61 ERA against Cleveland this season.

Zach McAllister (5-8, 4.25 ERA) will be on the mound for the Indians. McAllister has also struggled of late, going 0-5 with a 5.75 ERA in his last eight starts.

Royals vs. Indians: Kansas City defeats Cleveland 7-6 in 14 innings

The Kansas City Royals blew an early lead but pulled out a victory in extras, downing the Cleveland Indians 7-6 in 14 innings.

Kansas City depended on twelve innings out of their bullpen, as starter Jake Odorizzi lasted only two frames. The rookie right-hander allowed one run on two hits and three walks while throwing 43 of his 65 pitches for strikes.

The Royals were able to erase the Indians’ one-run lead in the 3rd, scoring six runs on five hits. Third baseman Mike Moustakas doubled to drive in two and right fielder Jeff Francoeur followed him up with his 15th home run of the year, a three-run shot to left. All of the runs came against Indians starter Jeanmar Gomez.

Right-hander Nate Adcock followed Odorizzi’s disappointing start by allowing a single unearned run over 3 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old allowed two hits and a walk while collecting six strikeouts. Left-hander Francisley Bueno added 1 1/3 perfect innings of work.

Unfortunately for the Royals their next three relievers weren’t able to retain the lead. Aaron Crow, Tim Collins and Greg Holland combined to allow four runs on four hits and five walks over the next two innings, sending the contest into extras.

The game remained tied well into extra innings until Kansas City was able to move ahead for good in the 14th on an RBI single off the bat of second baseman Tony Abreu. Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base in the bottom-half of the frame, but he managed to escape the jam and collect his third save of the season.

Royals vs. Indians: Game time, TV schedule and more

The Kansas City Royals send their top pitching prospect to the mound as they look to rebound from Friday's loss to the Cleveland Indians.

Jake Odorizzi makes his second career start Saturday night against the same Indians he faced in his first career start. Ordorizzi made his MLB debut last Sunday in Kansas City, lasting 5 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Ordorizzi got off to a great start in his first game against the Indians, allowing just two hits in his first five innings before getting tagged for three runs on four hits in the sixth, including a two-run home run to Carlos Santana.

The Indians will send Jeanmar Gomez to the mound. Gomez takes Ubaldo Jimenez's position in the after Cleveland shut Jimenez down with a sprained right ankle.

Royals vs. Indians game recap: Kansas City comeback falls short, Royals lose 8-5

The Kansas City Royals found themselves down early to the Cleveland Indians and were unable to mount a comeback, eventually losing 8-5 Friday night. Royals starting pitcher Will Smith earned his ninth loss of the season, as he allowed 6 runs on 9 hits in just over three innings of work.

Smith simply had no answer for the consistent barrage of Cleveland hits, allowing three runs in the 2nd, one in the 3rd, and two more in the 4th before being pulled. Royals reliever Everett Teaford allowed two more runs in the 5th. After the 5th the Royals were able to hold the Indians scoreless, but the damage had been done.

Down 8-1, the Royals made an attempt at a comeback, starting with first baseman Billy Butler's 2-run homer in the 6th. Catcher Salvador Perez drove in 2 additional runs in the 8th, but the comeback was too little too late, as Cleveland's Chris Perez picked up his 39th save of the year.

Indians starting pitcher David Huff got the win, his third of the season.
