The Kansas City Royals came up short in their series opener with Texas on Monday afternoon, 8-4.

Kansas City came up short in their series-opener with Texas on Monday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium, as Rangers hitters cleared the fences five times en route to an 8-4 victory.

Royals starter Bruce Chen came back to Earth in a big way after shutting down the Tigers in his previous outing, and served up four long balls on his own before departing the game with six earned runs to his credit. Chen was out-dueled immediately from the jump by Texas right-hander Yu Darvish, who managed to take a perfect game into the sixth inning before a Kansas City rally plated three runners.

Aside from a pair of clutch run-producing hits from shortstop Tony Abreu in the sixth and eighth innings, Kansas City was hard-pressed to get anything going against Darvish and company until it was too late. Desperate to things up on Tuesday, Kansas City will send righty Jeremy Guthrie to the mound to face Texas's 15-8 starter Matt Harrison in the second game of the series.
