Charlie Weis discusses Dayne Crist, Kansas quarterback issues

John Rieger-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Weis offered an explanation for his decision to bench Crist for Michael Cummings during Saturday's loss.

Charlie Weis offered some insight to his decision to change quarterbacks late in the Kansas Jayhawks' 20-14 loss to Oklahoma State at a press conference on Monday.

After Oklahoma State went up, 17-0, Weis decided to bench senior Dayne Crist. On Kansas' fourth possession of the third quarter, and after Crist had thrown three-straight incomplete passes, Weis inserted freshman Michael Cummings.

Cummings led Kansas to two scoring drives and put the Jayhawks in position to win the game. Weis offered this explanation as to why he made the change:

We had been stagnant since after the first quarter. We had 100 yards of offense in the first quarter. We were stagnant after the first break, and then we are stagnant again after halftime. I just felt I had to do something to try to bring some energy. I'm dialing up everything on the call sheet...Well, if that's not doing it, the next thing you do is see if you can't change some personnel and see if that will do anything for you.

While Crist went 10-22 for 136 yards, Cummings was 5-10 for 75 yards and a touchdown.
