Baylor head coach Art Briles hopes that the Bears' win over Kansas on Saturday will build momentum for his squad, as the Bears look to become bowl eligible in 2012.
While the Kansas Jayhawks managed to keep it close in the first half, they couldn't keep up with the Baylor Bears in the second half as they lost 41-14 in a game that was delayed for 30 minutes due to a lightning strike in the area.
The Bears got out to a hot start as Nick Florence threw two touchdown passes in the first five minutes of the game to take a 14-0 lead. However, the Jayhawks responded with a 59-yard rushing touchdown by James Sims before a 22-yard touchdown run by Michael Cummings cut the score to 17-14.
At the time of the delay, KU trailed 20-14, but the Bears scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to get well out of the reach of the Jayhawks.
Although the Jayhawks found some success on the ground, the large deficit proved especially difficult for KU to close as their passing game struggled mightily against Baylor. Cummings completed just 8 of 18 attempts for 78 yards and threw two interceptions. He was eventually replaced by Dayne Crist, who didn't fare much better, completing 2 of 7 attempts.
Box Score Hero: Baylor's Nick Florence completed 25 of 40 passes for 335 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also adding 41 yards rushing and a touchdown on 8 rushing attempts.
Rankings Ramifications: The Bears were not ranked as they entered the week and a win over Kansas, no matter how convincing, is very unlikely to earn them a spot in the top 25 of the BCS standings.
But Did They Cover? Baylor was favored by 17 over the Jayhawks and managed to cover that with 24 unanswered points to finish the game and pull away to a 27-point margin of victory.
Next Week's Schedule: The Bears will begin the first of four consecutive games against opponents that are currently ranked with a trip to play Oklahoma on the road, while the Jayhawks will try to snap their eight-game losing streak against Texas Tech.
Kansas Jayhawks quarterback Michael Cummings threw a pair of third-quarter interceptions, and the turnovers have helped the Baylor Bears take a commanding 34-14 lead in a Big 12 Conference game that enters the fourth quarter.
The Jayhawks (1-7, 0-5 Big 12) had four offensive possessions in the third, however, none were able to move inside Baylor territory. Two of those Kansas possessions ended with interceptions tossed by Cummings, who's 8-for-17 with 78 yards.
Baylor (3-4, 0-4 Big 12) used two third-quarter rushing touchdowns to extended its lead to 20 points.
The first was a one-yard rush by quarterback Bryce Petty with 10:59 to go in the third quarter, while the second was a seven-yard keeper by starting quarterback Nick Florence, which came with 2:24 remaining. Florence already has 277 passing yards with two touchdowns.
Baylor wide receiver Terrance Williams has 10 catches with 129 yards and a touchdown.
The Bears will begin the fourth quarter with the ball inside its own territory.
Despite running back James Sims already rushing for 108 yards on 13 carries, the Kansas Jayhawks trail the Baylor Bears, 20-14, at halftime of a Big 12 Conference football game at Floyd Casey Stadium.
The Bears (3-4, 0-4 Big 12) have used a pair of passing touchdowns from quarterback Nick Florence and field goals from kicker Aaron Jones to take a six-point lead into the locker room.
Florence completed both his touchdown passes in the first quarter. The first was a 11-yarder to Terrance Williams while the second was a big 68-yard catch-and-run to Lache Seastrunk.
Jones nailed field goals from 35 and 22 yards out, the last capped the first half's scoring with 1:02 to remaining in the second quarter.
Kansas' two scores came on a 59-yard rush from Sims, who scored in the first quarter, and a 22-yard rush by Michael Cummings, who cut Baylor's lead to 17-14 with 5:46 to go in the second quarter.
The Jayhawks (1-7, 0-5) will receive the ball to start the second half.
The Baylor Bears have taken a 17-7 lead over the Kansas Jayhawks in a Big 12 Conference matchup after one quarter. The Jayhawks (1-7, 0-5) allowed the Bears (3-4, 0-4 Big 12) to score the game's first 14 points, and will need to score some points if they'd like to get back into the contest.
The Bears' touchdowns came on throws by senior quarterback Nick Florence. The senior found Terrance Williams on a 11-yard scoring play that capped a 11-play, 84-yard drive on the first possession of the game.
Then, after a defensive stop, Florence connected with Lache Seastrunk for a 68-yard catch-and-run. An extra point by Aaron Jones gave Baylor an early 14-0 lead with 10:09 to go in the first quarter.
Kansas closed within 14-7 thanks to a stunning 58-yard rushing touchdown by running back James Sims. The play was the first and only of a drive that lasted just 10 seconds.
A 35-yard field goal by Jones capped the quarter's scoring.
The Jayhawks offense hasn't scored more than 17 points in any of its five conference losses, while the Bears have allowed a combined 210 points in their four conference losses.
