Turner Gill, Kansas Football Picks Up First 2012 Recruit In Daniel Gray

The Kansas Jayhawks and head coach Turner Gill now have their first official pledge for the 2012 recruiting class with speedy cornerback Daniel Gray from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The good news is that, according to scouts, this first catch is a good one.

Gray was also offered by Texas Tech and, closer to home, Florida International, although KU Sports notes that larger schools from the area like Miami also showed interest. Yet with the Jayhawks, Gray gets to flash his 4.3 speed against high-profile programs and compete for instant playing time. He'll also have a fellow Floridian in this year's incoming freshman class with cornerback Chris Robinson.

Boyd Anderson defensive coordinator Austin Lewis told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, "He’s definitely a leader for me in the secondary on the defensive side of the ball. He’s been working on and off the field really hard. I’m proud of the kid. He told me he was very excited. He can’t wait to be a Jayhawk."

While this is good news, it's important to remember that verbal commits are not binding, and the official signing day comes next February 1.
