Big 12 Basketball Tournament 2012: Bracket Gives Missouri, Kansas First Round Bye

After their eighth straight Big 12 conference title, it's an obvious by-product that the Kansas Jayhawks will not have to play in the first round of the Big 12 Basketball Championship coming up Wednesday. Instead, Bill Self and his squad will get to watch the basement dwellers duke it out for the chance to take on the champs. That said, few saw Frank Haith's first season at Missouri going nearly as well as Self's. And both Mizzou and Kansas will be watching and waiting for their opponents in the beginning of conference tourney play.

Kansas State also gets to wait out the first day before taking on the Baylor Bears, who are a surprising fourth seed in this year's tourney after being ranked in the top 10 nationally most of the season. They have Iowa State to thank for slipping into the No. 3 slot.

The Big 12 Conference Championship begins Wednesday, March 7, and will be at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. Here is a look at the complete Big 12 Conference Championship Schedule:

2012 Big 12 Tournament: Bracket, Schedule, TV Times

The good news for local college basketball fans is that Kansas, Kansas State and Missouri earned first round byes in the upcoming Big 12 basketball tournament as the bottom feeders of Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech have to face off on Wednesday night. Local action starts on Thursday with Kansas State facing Baylor in the toughest match-up for any of the three.

The Jayhawks have already secured the Big 12 title during the regular season and a conference title would cement a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. For a team that was expected to rebuild, that's a tremendous coaching job on the part of Bill Self and a testament to the performance this season of Thomas Robinson and Tyshawn Taylor. The same can be said for Missouri and Frank Haith's performance.
