College football schedule 2012: Wildcats prepare for high-powered Red Raiders offense

Jamie Squire

One of the best games in college football will be held in Manhattan, Kan., Oct. 27 as the nation's 10th-ranked offenses square off in a pivotal Big 12 game.

After throttling then-10th ranked West Virginia in Week 8, Kansas State has little time to rest.

Just a week later, they play host to the offense-heavy Red Raiders of Texas Tech in a game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT Oct. 27.

Texas Tech, ranked No. 14 in the nation, outlasted instate rival TCU, 56-53, in overtime Oct. 20, boosting their record to 6-1 (3-1 Big 12). The win made the Red Raiders bowl-eligible, but with their offense averaging 42.9 points a game, they have aspirations of a conference championship. The Wildcats, incidentally, also average 42.9 points a game – the two schools are tied for 10th in the nation in scoring.

K-State's Collin Klein (175.8) and Texas Tech's Seth Doege (169.6) are the third- and fifth-highest rated passers in Division I, respectively, and both are likely Heisman Trophy candidates after their first seven games.

The Wildcats are at the top of the Big 12, leading Texas Tech and Oklahoma (both 3-1 in conference play).

In other Big 12 action, Kansas, losers of six straight, will host No. 23-ranked Texas at 11 a.m. CT Saturday, Oct. 22.

Jayhawks head coach Charlie Weis says he will stay with QB Michael Cummings over Dayne Crist Saturday. Cummings appeared in relief of Crist in the Jayhawks' 52-7 loss to Oklahoma Oct. 20.

Over in the SEC, Missouri (3-4, 0-4 SEC) looks for its first-ever SEC win when the Kentucky Wildcats head into Columbia, Mo. It appears James Franklin will miss his second consecutive start, listed as doubtful on the Tigers' injury report this week.

Kickoff between the Tigers and Wildcats is set for 11 a.m. CT Oct. 27.
