Kansas State vs. TCU 2012: Wildcat fans anxiously await BCS verdict

Kansas State defeated TCU on Saturday night, 23-10, running their record to a perfect 10-0 and maintaining their stranglehold on the Big 12 standings. The Wildcats are poised to assume the top spot in this week's BCS rankings, after Alabama's upset loss to Texas A&M.

Quarterback Collin Klein, widely considered the frontrunner for this year's Heisman Trophy, struggled against the Horned Frogs defense. Klein, who played despite suffering a concussion the previous week, completed just 12 of 21 pass attempts for 145 yards and a touchdown, and ran 15 times for 50 yards and a pair of scores. While citing the injury concern, SB Nation Kansas State site Bring on the Cats gave credit for Klein's struggles to TCU's defense:

A large part of the offense's struggles can be directly attributed to TCU's defensive line play. Instead of having time to stand in the pocket and go through his reads, Klein was often harassed early, and there were few running lanes for John Hubert, Angelo Pease and Klein. TCU held K-State to 260 total yards, and 115 rushing yards, well below the Wildcats' season averages.

Much credit to TCU in this one. For a team that is struggling with youth and depth issues, the Horned Frogs are still a tough out. And they're only going to get tougher with experience.

The waiting game now begins for Wildcat fans. Kansas State will likely be ranked behind Oregon, who throttled Cal on Saturday night, 59-17, to solidify their top position in the human polls. However, the computers that make up a third of the BCS calculation have not been impressed with the Ducks' schedule, preferring Kansas State's performance in the nation's highest-rated conference:

It will be interesting to see how the first-place votes are split tomorrow among K-State and Oregon. Also, Florida won and Notre Dame [posted] another unimpressive victory, and should remain ahead of the Ducks in the computers. K-State's previous opponents posted a 4-4 record today (Missouri State was off).

Kansas State returns to action next week at Baylor.

Kansas State vs. TCU final: Wildcats win 23-10

The Kansas State Wildcats made their claim to be No. 1, muscling their way to a 23-10 win over the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, Tex. on Friday night.

Despite a head injury last week, Collin Klein was his usual, gritty self, rushing for 52 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats on the ground. Klein's biggest play through the air set up Kansas State's first score of the game, as he connected with Chris Harper for a 62-yard pass on their second possession of the game. Five plays later, Klein's seven-yard touchdown run gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead, which they would never give up.

Kansas State held TCU to under 200 yards of offense for most of the night, as the Horned Frogs only crossed that plateau with the game's outcome not in question late in the fourth quarter. A K-State fumble with less than two minutes remaining gave TCU a 39-yard field, and three plays later Trevone Boykin hit Brandon Carter for a 19-yard touchdown pass. That score marked the first time all season Kansas State had given up points off a turnover.

Of note, Wildcats receiver Tyler Lockett was helped off the field with two minutes remaining, not putting weight on his left foot after he was rolled onto by a TCU defender while engaged in run blocking. His status is currently unknown.

Box Score Hero: Collin Klein, who accounted for 195 of Kansas State's 260 yards.

Rankings Ramifications: If the BCS standings hold from last week, minus Alabama at the top, Kansas State would be the No. 1 team in the country. But the result may not change voters' minds in the human polls, which both (AP and Harris) have Oregon ahead of Kansas State.

But Did They Cover? Kansas State was favored by 7 points and did cover.

Next Week's Schedule: Kansas State plays on the road against Baylor (4-5), while TCU has a bye.

Kansas State vs. TCU update: Wildcats extend lead to 23-0 after 3

The Kansas State Wildcats have extended their lead over the TCU Horned Frogs, building a 23-0 margin after three quarters in Fort Worth on Saturday night.

The Wildcats put points on the board on their first possession of the second half as Collin Klein continued to work. After completed three passes for 26 yards, Klein capped off the eight-play scoring drive with a 34-yard sprint up the left side of the field to give Kansas State a 20-0 lead.

TCU made another mistake in the special teams game. After Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin lost 19 yards on a fumble, punter Ethan Perry shanked an eight-yard punt, giving K-State an 18-yard field. But as in the second quarter, the Wildcats couldn't make TCU fully pay and settled for a 27-yard field goal.

Kansas State leads TCU in total yards, 226-141. Klein is now 10-17 for 129 passing yards, while adding 52 yards on the ground. Matthew Tucker leads all TCU rushers with 62 yards on the ground.

Kansas State vs. TCU update: Wildcats have 13-0 lead at halftime

The Kansas State Wildcats were slowed in the second quarter, but tacked on a field goal for a 13-0 halftime lead against the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth on Saturday night.

The Wildcats were held to just 26 yards of offense in the second frame, and spent the end of the quarter going backwards. After starting a drive at midfield, Collin Klein was tackled for 14 yards' worth of loss on two plays, and Kansas State was forced to punt.

But TCU's Deante' Gray, returning punts because Skye Dawson has a back injury, fumbled the catch while back-pedaling. Klein and company were given a five-yard field, but the Horned Frogs defense was stifling, moving K-State back six yards and forcing a field goal attempt. Anthony Cantele put through a 20-yard field goal for the 13-0 lead.

Kansas State leads TCU in total yards, 160-99. Klein is 7-of-12 for 103 yards and one interception, with an additional 22 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Kansas State vs. TCU update: Wildcats take 10-0 lead after 1

The Kansas State Wildcats have grabbed a 10-0 lead against the TCU Horned Frogs after the first quarter in Fort Worth.

The No. 2 Wildcats got going early on the arm of Collin Klein, playing despite a head injury last week that made it unclear whether he would start tonight. On the first play of Kansas State's second possession, Klein connected with Allen Chapman for a 62-yard pass play that set the Wildcats up at the TCU 27-yard line.

As is customary for Kansas State in the red zone, Klein capped the drive with three straight runs, the last of which being a 7-yard jaunt for a touchdown.

A 31-yard Tramaine Thompson punt return set the Wildcats up with a 40-yard field on its next drive. After five plays netted only 16 yards, Anthony Cantele put through a 41-yard field goal for the 10-0 lead.

Klein is 3-7 for 80 yards in the passing game, while adding 31 yards on five rush attempts.
