Kendial Lawrence Becomes Major Part Of Mizzou Offense In 2012

Missouri's heavy 62-10 defeat of Southeastern Louisiana was the result that just about everyone expected, but Kendial Lawrence was not expected to have such a breakout game in his first coming back from injury from the Tigers. The tailback had a monster game, putting together 121 yards and two touchdowns on only 10 carries.

In his post-game quotes, Lawrence said that he thinks that he can get 1000 yards as a part of the Tigers this year, but his real goal is getting the team to new heights:

"I mean, rushing for 1,000 yards is probably every running back's goal but my goal is go out there and play as a team. I work my hardest on every play."

Missouri Vs. Southeastern Louisiana: Rock M Nation Reaction

How do you find bad news in a 52-point win? Bill Connelly of SB Nation Missouri Tigers blog Rock M Nation tells you how:

When you lose focus in the middle of a competition, it is really, really difficult to get it back. And as strange as it sounds in discussing a 52-point win, we saw quite a bit of that last night at Faurot Field. Mizzou scored four touchdowns in 3:49 in the first quarter -- James Franklin found T.J. Moe for a two-yard touchdown, Zaviar Gooden pulled off a pick six two plays later, Kendial Lawrence ripped off a 76-yard touchdown run after a SE Louisiana punt, and Kony Ealy decapitated SE Louisiana quarterback Nathan Stanley on the next play, setting up an easy Michael Sam fumble return touchdown. It was swift, devastating, and really, really easy. And Mizzou wouldn't score again for 23 minutes. The play-calling reverted to base play after base play, the blocking slacked, the rain came, and the offense completely lost its focus. It is pretty excusable in this instance -- for all intents and purposes, the game was over eight minutes in -- but it was still frustrating, if simply because it wasted an opportunity for the offense to execute in a sharp manner.

Despite his frustration, Connelly did find positives in the Tigers' overall performance, especially that of quarterback James Franklin, who completed 62% of his pass attempts.

Missouri faces Georgia at Faurot Field next Saturday, in the program's first game in the SEC.

Southeastern Louisiana Vs. Missouri 2012: Final Score And Game Recap

Missouri raced to an early and never looked back in a 62-10 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday night at Faurot Field in Columbia, MO.

The Tigers jumped to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to two defensive touchdowns and a Kendial Lawrence 76-yard rushing touchdown. Zaviar Gooden had a 20-yard interception return and Michael Sam had a 7-yard fumble return to score, giving the Tigers an easy stranglehold over the Lions just eight minutes into the game.

Lawrence would add a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Marcus Murphy would add two second-half punt returns for touchdowns, as Missouri extended their lead to 62-3 before SE Louisiana scored again with just 2:32 remaining in the game.

The Tigers would put up 261 yards on 36 carries, with QB James Franklin 13-of-21 for 131 yards and one touchdown. Missouri outgained SE Louisiana 452-223 in the game, forcing four turnovers and holding the Lions to just 1.7 yardds per rush in the game.

Southeastern Louisiana Vs. Missouri 2012: Game Time, TV Schedule And More

The Missouri Tigers will open their season a strong favorite over Southeastern Louisiana of the Southland Conference. Mizzou will be seeking a big win in their first ever game as a member of the Southeastern Conference and facing the Lions, who went 3-8 last season and are rebuilding, should give them a great shot -- Missouri has never lost to an FCS school.

Duel threat QB James Franklin will try to continue the strong season he put together in 2011 for the Tigers, leading an offense that has the potential to be one of the most exciting in the SEC. Nobody that the Lions have on either side of the ball can compare to the explosiveness of Franklin, and anything less than a huge win for Missouri in the game will be a disappointment.

Game Time: 6:07 p.m. CT at Faurot Field

TV: ESPN3, Pay-Per-View networks in Missouri as well as spill-over areas

Missouri's Gary Pinkel Discusses Southeastern Louisiana

Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel spoke with the media on a variety of topics on Monday, and among them was the season opening matchup against Southeastern Louisiana of the Southland Conference. Pinkel realizes the Lions do a lot of different things in all areas of the game, but he says the focus will be on Mizzou.

Here are some of his comments.

"They have good football players, they are going to do a lot of different things in their kicking game, a lot of different things in terms of that, they run a multiple offense, and they can do a lot of different things. Defensively we figure they are going to run a 30 defense, allow them to move around and do different things, so again this is more about Mizzou. I do not care who we are playing, this is about us playing our best game and that is my job to get our team to focus on playing our best game regardless of who we play."

Dorial Green-Beckham's Role In Missouri's Offense

There's no shortage of hype surrounding Missouri freshman WR Dorial Green-Beckham, the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2012 who choose the Tigers after one of the most high-profile recruitment processes in school history.

He's only 18 years old, but at 6'6 220 with a reported 4.4 40 time, he's already more physically gifted that the vast majority of NFL WR's.

But while Tigers fans are already to pencil him in as Megatron 2.0, Missouri coach Gary Pinkel is doing his best to manage expectations of his star freshman. In a press conference on Tuesday, he downplayed a question about whether DGB was "revolutionizing" the Y position in his offense:

"No not really, we played Danario Alexander in there quite a bit as a wide receiver. You know we have a position where you can play that as a wide receiver in there and you can also play it as a tight end in there and the things you can do are different. He is learning both and he is moving in and out and he is a little bit bigger athlete obviously from the wide receiver stand point, but he is certainly not a tight end. We kind of worked those together and it will work out fine. He has worked very hard and we are going to let him do his thing in preparation."

Alexander had 113 receptions, 1,781 receiving yards and 14 TD's in his senior season in 2009 before moving on to the NFL. It may not be fair to heap those types of expectations on a freshman, but that's the world we live in.
