The Chiefs first round choice is finding his footing at the pro level.

The Kansas City Chiefs are counting on Eric Fisher to come in and become an impact player along the offensive line as early as possible, and it seems that the word is so far, so good on the team's first overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft. As the Chiefs continue to practice at their June minicamp, Fisher is making good progress among the starters.

Fisher was the first pick in the draft above Luke Joeckel, now with the Jaguars, and was one of several offensive tackles expected to step right in to a starting spot from the first round. He replaces Eric Winston along the Chiefs offensive front at right tackle, although it's uncertain whether that's his long term home. Nevertheless, the Chiefs need him to keep Alex Smith upright and create room for Jamaal Charles in the running game.

"I'm making improvements every day," said Fisher during Thursday's media session. "Every day I come out here to work. Going against the guys I'm going against makes me a better player every day. Just getting in the playbook and having a great time."

When asked whether he needed to take a break or keep going, Fisher said both sound right.

"A little bit of both," Fisher answered. "Obviously, it's a lot of hard work. A lot comes with it. You have to keep your body right, but training camp, we'll definitely have enough football to play. Yeah, it would be nice to stay here and play a little bit longer, but every opportunity is a blessing. I try to make the most of them."

Fisher is playing with the first team and is expected to start at right tackle from the first week.

Not much has changed in SB Nation's latest mock draft for the Chiefs.

The 2013 NFL Draft is just days away. With one more week of speculation and rumor-mongering left, many draft experts are releasing their final mock drafts over the coming days.

SB Nation's Dan Kadar won't have a complete mock draft until Wednesday, but he did release his weekly update on Monday. As usual, he has the Kansas City Chiefs going with Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel.

There is still some confusion on where exactly the Chiefs will go with the first overall pick. The majority believe it will be Joeckel. However, Eric Fisher is still a strong possibility, as is Dion Jordan to a lesser degree.

For the first time in years, there isn't a clear cut No. 1 pick in the draft. However, with Branden Albert's status still up in the air and a need at right tackle, many people believe that Joeckel will be the pick. He would be the first offensive lineman to go No. 1 since Jake Long in 2008.

Chiefs fans can familiarize themselves with Joeckel by reading Kadar's scouting report.

It seems the Chiefs could be down to deciding between offensive tackles, and one writer believes they'll go with the one from Central Michigan.

With the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs are deciding between a few prospects. Two of them are largely believed to be offensive tackles Luke Joeckel, out of Texas A&M, and Central Michigan's Eric Fisher.

It feels as though the choice remains squarely up in the air, with many prognosticators flipping between Fisher and Joeckel. Sports Illustrated's Don Banks, in his latest mock on Wednesday, is one of those going with Fisher. Banks writes, however, that this decision could easily come down to draft night:

I've heard a lot of people opine about what the Chiefs should do at No. 1, or probably will do, but I haven't come across anyone who seems to know whether Kansas City resides definitively in either the Fisher camp or the Luke Joeckel camp. Maybe the plan is to toss a coin on draft night. But is it heads Fisher and tails Joeckel, or the other way around? I call for a second coin flip to determine the particulars of the first coin flip.

Joeckel and Fisher are ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in Matthew Fairburn's prospect ratings for SB Nation. Meanwhile, Joeckel is the draft's best overall prospect in Dan Kadar's top 200 prospect big board for SB Nation. Fisher sits at No. 4.

Kansas City needs to fill out the offensive line, making Joeckel a logical choice.

In the latest SB Nation NFL mock draft by Matthew Fairburn, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Texas A&M Aggies left tackle Luke Joeckel with the No. 1 overall pick.

Joeckel makes all the sense in the world for the Chiefs. After cutting right tackle Eric Winston earlier in the offseason, Kansas City needs to fill the void. It also has to be considered that left tackle Branden Albert is on the franchise tag and has been the source of trade rumors for quite some time.

If Albert is dealt, Joeckel immediately steps in as the starting left tackle. Should Albert stay on the tag or be signed to a long-term deal by general manager John Dorsey, then Joeckel would start on the right side with Donald Stephenson backing him up.

It's tough to see the Chiefs going with any other position at this point. With quarterback Alex Smith traded for and corners Sean Smith and Dunta Robinson brought in via free agency, Kansas City doesn't have any other glaring needs sans inside linebacker.

Most expect the Kansas City Chiefs to take Luke Joeckel with the No. 1 overall pick, but could Eric Fisher be an option, as well?

When the Kansas City Chiefs made a trade for then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, it made crafting a mock draft much easier. The 2013 quarterback class isn't the strongest we've seen in recent years, and it was a tough call on whether or not the Chiefs would be interested in taking West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith with that No. 1 pick.

Now that the trade has been made, mocks around the Internet have pretty much settled on Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel. But he's not necessarily a unanimous selection at this point.

Don Banks of SI.com put out his latest mock draft on Wednesday and he has the Chiefs actually taking Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher:

After going with Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel atop my first four mocks of the year, I've been swayed by the Eric Fisher-at-No. 1 movement. This is the time of year when you start to hear way too much about a player's "upside," but it would seem the more athletic Fisher has a bit of an edge in that department over Joeckel. I guess we'll know who K.C. really likes if it starts early exclusive contract negotiations with one of them.

Banks has Joeckel going to the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 4. Joeckel is the consensus top tackle in a very strong class, but Fisher is certainly a different kind of player and it does seem likely that the Chiefs would consider Fisher if he fits their scheme better.
Despite a horrible record last year, Kansas City doesn't have many holes but can plug one by drafting Joeckel.

In SB Nation's latest three-round mock draft by Matthew Fairburn, the Kansas City Chiefs are taking the safest player in the draft along with a risky quarterback.

In order, the Chiefs selected Texas A&M Aggies offensive tackle Luke Joeckel in the first round, followed by outside linebacker Jamie Collins of Southern Mississippi and quarterback Mike Glennon of the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the third round.

Joeckel fills an immediate need if Kansas City trades current left tackle Branden Albert, who is currently on a franchise tag. Rumors have been swirling that Albert is on the block, with the Chiefs hoping to bring back a second round pick and perhaps a later pick also.

If Albert is kept, Joeckel steps in and starts at right tackle where Eric Winston was last year before being cut this offseason.

Collins would be nothing more than a role player and frankly doesn't make sense at this point. The Chiefs need depth here but could add a starting safety at this point in someone such as Bacarri Rambo of the Georgia Bulldogs.
With the supplemental pick Kansas City has in the third, the Chiefs roll the dice here and draft Glennon. Nobody has a stronger arm in the draft than Glennon, but his decision making and accuracy are in question. Glennon could come in and develop behind Alex Smith for a few years, making this choice worthwhile.

The No. 9 seed Shockers have surprised everyone with their postseason run, knocking off No. 8 Pittsburgh, No. 1 Gonzaga, No. 13 La Salle, and No. 2 Ohio State en route to their first Final Four appearance since 1965. Wichita State has gotten it done with a team effort, spreading the scoring around evenly. Guard Malcolm Armstead was named the West Regional's Most Outstanding Player, but six different players have scored in double figures during the tournament for the Shockers.

If Wichita State wants its run to continue it will have to play its best game of the season on Saturday against Louisville. The Cardinals have won 14 straight games and breezed through the tournament, winning by an average margin of 21.75 points per game. Armstead needs to have a strong game against the Louisville pressure defense for the Shockers to have a chance.

With the draft three weeks away, is Kansas City going to lock in on the left tackle? Mock drafts are starting to go that way.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been on the clock for the 2013 NFL draft for months now, and the time is winding down. After a myriad of moves to address certain needs, the Chiefs have whittled down to only a few key pieces they might like to add with the top overall selection in the draft. It now appears set that unless Kansas City becomes enamored with one of the defensive prospects like Star Lotulelei, Sharrif Floyd, or Dion Jordan, that they will instead address their need at left tackle. Though it is not a huge need to fill, since they have retained Branden Albert for now.

Kansas City could seemingly draft a player like Jordan and then keep Albert at left tackle, perhaps signing him to a long-term deal while they currently have him on a franchise tag. With several top right tackles currently available in free agency, such as Andre Smith, the Chiefs would not be in a bad position on the offensive line. However, many analysts feel that the potential of a player like Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher far exceeds what Albert has proven he can bring to the table, while also potentially coming at a cheaper cost and for a longer amount of time since they are significantly younger than Albert.

For these reasons, it is becoming more and more obvious to many draft experts that the Chiefs will decide on a tackle. Furthermore, many are thinking that the NFL-readiness of Joeckel pushes him slightly ahead of the higher ceiling of Fisher, and that Kansas City will take the Texas A&M OT with the first overall pick. In the collaborative SBNation bloggers mock draft, Joel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride had this to say of the Chiefs taking Joeckel:

Andy Reid's pass-heavy offense will value Joeckel, who will start his career on the right side of the line opposite Branden Albert. Joeckel then becomes insurance on the left side if Albert leaves the Chiefs via free agency in 2014.

It is far from a guarantee that the Chiefs will take Joeckel, let alone a left tackle, but as the draft nears it is becoming more apparent that they probably will. At least, according to the mock drafters.
