Gil Meche Says He Needs To Earn His Contract

The best part about signing a big contract, like the five-year, $55 million one Gil Meche signed at the end of 2006, is obviously the money. Suddenly, you're richer than you probably ever imagined.

The bad part, as Meche has found out, is the expectations that come with it, particularly when your deal is the largest in franchise history (tied with Mike Sweeney).

"It's tough. I need to be out there," Meche said. "I have this contract, and I need to earn it. You try not to get too down.

His statistics would say he's not earning it. He's 0-4 with a devil-like 6.66 ERA.
