The Kansas City Chiefs are sitting at 2-0 with a chance to make it three in a row against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
Chiefs head coach Todd Haley breaks the season into four quarters to focus on a smaller slice of the pie as the season rolls along. Haley says the goal for the team is to go at least 3-1 in each quarter of the season.
"Our goal each and every quarter will always be to get to three, the thinking being that if you could be 3-1 in every quarter I’d say you’d have a very difficult time not making the playoffs. That’s our primary goal, to get into the playoffs so that we have a chance to play in big games for bigger games. We’re 2-0 and we’re 2-0 for a reason, because we’ve played better than our opponents in each game and I will continue to try to impress upon these guys of what it takes to continue to do that."
They're now at 2-0 with a chance to make it three against the 49ers. If they can't get it done against them, their next shot comes in week five against the Indianapolis Colts so clearly the Chiefs' best chance at a 3-1 first quarter of the season is beating the 49ers on Sunday. The Colts are a significantly tougher opponent.
Even going 2-2 represents a big win for the Chiefs if last year is any indication. Here's how they finished in the four quarters last year: 0-4, 1-3, 2-2, 1-3.
Starting off on the right foot would be a nice start for the Chiefs.
