Cowtown Rundown: Kansas City Sports News 9/3

Chiefs get the big win

It's been over two years, but the Kansas City Chiefs have finally gotten a preseason win. The last time they pulled out a preseason victory was Aug. 28, 2008 against the St. Louis Rams.

It wasn't pretty at times -- Matt Cassel had a very average game -- but they got it done, 17-13, against the Green Bay Packers.

The crowd was one of the smallest I've ever seen at Arrowhead. My non-expert analysis would say there were less than 35,000 people there (probably a lot less). The final preseason game is always boring and it was a rainy in Kansas City so there were plenty of reasons not to go. The paid attendance was just under 64,000.

Two good players on Thursday night: RB Jackie Battle leading all Chiefs rushers for the third straight game and return man Javier Arenas busting out another long return.

Mizzou headed back to the Edward Jones Dome to play Illinois

Illinois QB Nathan Scheelhaase is from the Kansas City area and went to Rockhurst High School. Two years ago he was in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis playing for a Missouri State title against Blue Springs South in the 6A class State Championship.

Scheelhaase and Rockhurst lost 14-9.

"Obviously, that’s something that still motivates me, and one day in practice, I might think of it and it might motivate me to do a little something extra after practice. I think it has turned out to be a good thing in the long run."

They'll face off on Saturday.

Royals have an off day

If you hadn't noticed, the Royals didn't play on Thursday. They had an off day to prepare for the Detroit Tigers on Friday.

It'll be a good game with Zack Greinke taking the mound against Jeremy Bonderman at 7:05 p.m.

I gotta be honest -- it's hard to get excited about baseball when football is coming up.
