While there are some who contend the Kansas City Royals should trade Billy Butler, the team’s designated hitter and part-time first baseman, those outside the organization see Butler as a fine young hitter with a very team-friendly contract. In fact, Jim Bowden of ESPN calls it one of the top ten in the Major Leagues.
He writes, “One of the most underrated hitters in baseball, Butler continues to hit for average and drive in runs as one of the keys to the Royals’ lineup. Considering the marketplace for some of the best hitters in the game, there is no doubt his deal becomes very club-friendly in 2013 and 2014 if he continues his progress and the Royals start to win.”
Butler hit .295 last year with 19 home runs and 95 RBI. While others on the Royals may have a higher power ceiling, no one on the team has the established ability to make contact again and again like Butler, making him an essential piece of the Royals line-up.
